A reflection/confession based on our Christian calling and the charges for the death of Freddie
Gray.

"The most serious charges were brought against Officer Caesar R.
Goodson Jr., who was driving the van that carried Mr. Gray to a police station
after his April 12 arrest. Along with involuntary manslaughter, Officer Goodson,
45, was charged with 'second-degree depraved heart murder,' which means
indifference to human life." – As reported by The New York Times, May 1, 2015,
in “6 Baltimore Police Officers Charged in Freddie Gray Death” (www.nytimes.com/2015/05/02/us/freddie-gray-autopsy-report-given-to-baltimore-prosecutors.html?smid)
We have been charged
with the care of creation
but we are instead
destroying the planet.
We have been charged
with being our brother’s keeper
but we are instead
rising up against Abel.
We have been charged
with loving our neighbor
but we are instead
neglecting communities.
We have been charged
with being Imago Dei
but we are instead
embodying Homo Economicus.
We have been charged
with bringing good news
but we are instead
protecting our own interests.
Given our indifference to human life
we can consider ourselves guilty
of umpteenth-degree depraved heart murder.
We have been charged.
