A PARADE in Cárdenas, Matanzas, Cuba, featuring top students from Marcelo Salado School (formerly La Progresiva Presbyterian School) circa 1963. This annual festivity named the best female student “Little Star” and the best male student, “Zorro”, titles that revealed and perpetuated gender roles and biases. Other top performing students were invited to join the parade by riding in a horse-pulled carriage (a means of transportation in my hometown that dates back to colonial times). In the background of the picture, the old town hall and the Presbyterian school (to the left). Notice the racial diversity of the students: White, Chinese, Black, Mulatto and other mixed races.

UN DESFILE en Cárdenas, Matanzas, Cuba, con los mejores estudiantes de la primaria Marcelo Salado (antes el Colegio Presbiteriano La Progresiva), alrededor de 1963. Esta festividad anual nombraba a la mejor estudiante “La Estrellita” y al mejor estudiante, “El Zorro”, títulos que revelan y perpetúan los roles y prejuicios de género. Se invitaba a otros alumnos y alumnas sobresalientes a unirse al desfile compartiendo el paseo en coche (un medio de transporte en mi pueblo natal que se remonta a la época colonial).  Al fondo de la foto están el antiguo ayuntamiento y el colegio presbiteriano (a la izquierda). Noten la diversidad racial de los alumnos: blancos, chinos, negros, mulatos y de otras razas mixtas.
