I WAS BORN INTO A CATHOLIC FAMILY IN CUBA, where Our Lady of Charity/Our Lady of El Cobre was often invoked and on display. She is the Patroness of Cuba, and has taken on special meaning in the last five decades as hundreds of thousands of Cubans have escaped the island nation by taking to the sea on rafts and squalid boats, many drowning in the Florida Straits. Her nickname is Cachita, and her racial identity varies depending on the printing. Her feast day is September 8, and in the Afro-Cuban Orisha religion (also called Santería) she is identified with Oshun. Thanks to my friend Alfredo S. Lanier who years ago gave me this tile with the image of the Virgin.

NACÍ EN UNA FAMILIA CATÓLICA EN CUBA, donde Nuestra Señora la Virgen de la Caridad del Cobre era invocada y exhibida con frecuencia. Ella es la Patrona de Cuba y ha tomado un significado especial en las últimas cinco décadas a medida que cientos de miles de cubanos han escapado de la isla lanzándose al mar en balsas y embarcaciones escuálidas, muchos de ellos ahogándose en el Estrecho de la Florida. Su apodo es Cachita y su identidad racial varía de una impresión a otra. Su fiesta se celebra el 8 de septiembre y en la religión Orisha afrocubana (llamada también Santería) se identifica con Oshun. Gracias a mi amigo Alfredo Lanier que hace años me regaló este azulejo con la imagen de la Virgen.
