POPY: THE LAST DOLL OF MY CUBAN CHILDHOOD. She was a gift from the Three Kings on January 6, 1968, when I was just 10 years old. She marked the abrupt ending of my childhood, because the following year there were no toys, but only two corpiños (training bras) for my budding breasts. They were handmade by a local seamstress, white fabric with delicate blue embroidery across the top, an attempt to add a touch of beauty to an awkward stage of life. And two years later this petite doll joined me on the journey as a refugee child from Cárdenas to Madrid, and then on to Chicago. Popy seems to be of Spanish origin, made by the Famosa brand, and there were several editions with different tones for the skin, hair and eyes. I don’t remember whether mine is male or female, because it came only with a diaper and a small vest, but I always referred to it with a feminine article and pronoun; maybe it’s time to rethink the pronouns! A few years ago my mother, who belonged to a generation that spoke of virginal purity, crocheted this dress for her; it’s not right for a Cuban girl of any age to be running around half naked!

POPY: LA ÚLTIMA MUÑECA DE MI INFANCIA CUBANA. Me la dejaron los Reyes Magos el 6 de enero de 1968, cuando yo apenas tenía 10 años. Ella marcó el abrupto final de mi infancia, porque al año siguiente no hubo juguetes, sino solo dos corpiños para mis senos nacientes. Estaban hechos a mano por una costurera del barrio, con tela blanca y un delicado bordado azul en la parte superior, un intento de añadir un toque de belleza a una incómoda etapa de la vida. Y dos años más tarde esta pequeña muñeca me acompañó en la travesía como niña refugiada de Cárdenas a Madrid y luego a Chicago. Parece que la Popy es de origen español, fabricada por la marca Famosa, y que hubo varias ediciones con distintos tonos de piel, cabello y ojos. No recuerdo si la mía es hembra o varón, pues venía solo con un pañal y un chalequito, pero siempre me referí a ella con el artículo y el pronombre femeninos; ¡quizás es hora de que repiense sus pronombres. Hace unos años mi madre, que perteneció a la generación en la que todavía se hablaba del virginal pudor, le tejió ese vestido a ganchillo; no está bien que una niña cubana de ninguna edad ande en cueros.
