They accused him of being a party animal
because he shared the table with all kinds of people,
but Jesus said: “Long live life.”
They accused him of being a friend of sinners
because he neither judged nor condemned anyone,
but Jesus said: “Long live life.”
They accused him of being irreverent
because he violated the social norms of his time,
but Jesus said: “Long live life.”
They accused him of breaking the Sabbath
because he cured sick people on the day of rest,
but Jesus said: “Long live life.”
They accused him of blasphemy
because he challenged conventional religiosity,
but Jesus said: “Long live life.”
They accused him of disorderly conduct
because he drove merchants out of the temple,
but Jesus said: “Long live life.”
They accused him of committing sedition
because he assumed political authority in a conquered land,
but Jesus said: “Long live life.”
They accused him, they tried him, they condemned him,
they tortured him, they crucified him, they buried him,
but Jesus said: “Long live life.”
And now that he is not here
those of us who claim to be his disciples
must dare follow in his steps
so that all the forgotten and the oppressed
whom Jesus welcomed and defended
might live with dignity and cry out with a loud voice:
“Long live life ... Christ indeed rose!”
