Nos apuntamos, Jesús,
para dar el vaso de agua,
porque eso nos hace sentir
que somos buenos.
Nos apuntamos, Jesús,
para comprar el agua,
porque eso nos hace sentir
que somos generosas.
Nos apuntamos, Jesús,
incluso para lavar el vaso,
porque eso nos hace sentir
que somos diligentes.
Pero no vengas, Jesús, por favor,
con preguntas impertinentes
sobre las causas de la sed,
el control de los recursos naturales,
y la escasez de empleos dignos,
porque no tenemos anhelo de justicia
y preferimos saciarnos con la caridad.

“We sign up”
A Revised Common Lectionary resource for July 2
A reflection based on Matthew 10:40-42
by Magdalena I. García
We sign up, Jesus,
to offer a cup of water,
because it makes us feel
like we are good people.
We sign up, Jesus,
to purchase the water,
because it makes us feel
like we are generous.
We sign up, Jesus,
even to wash the cup,
because that makes us feel
like we are diligent.
But please, Jesus, don’t come to us
with impertinent questions
about the causes of thirst,
the control of natural resources,
and the shortage of decent jobs,
because we don’t crave justice
and we prefer to fill ourselves with charity.
