“He descended into hell.”[1]
Thus says the creed
that we often repeat
without stopping to consider
the meaning of these words.
And in our post-Galileo era
we glide over this phrase
hoping that nobody
will ask us to explain
the meaning of these words.
And yet, as we read the Gospels
and see Jesus sitting at table
with tax collectors, women and sinners,
we realize that we know exactly
the meaning of these words.
Jesus descended into hell
all of his earthly life
by daring to get close
to those whom society had deemed
contaminated, cursed, corrupt,
and by offering them all
the gift of friendship, dignity and life.
And so the question is not
whether Jesus indeed
descended into hell,
but whether we also
will have the courage
to descend into the hell
of our cities and our world
of our cities and our world
and to offer the outcasts
the gift of friendship, dignity and life.

Así
dice el credo
que a
menudo repetimos
sin
detenernos a considerar
el
significado de estas palabras.
Y en nuestra era post Galileo

pasamos
por encima de esta frase
esperando
que nadie
se
atreva a preguntarnos
el
significado de estas palabras.
Y, sin embargo, al leer los Evangelios

a Jesús sentado a la mesa
con
cobradores de impuestos, mujeres y pecadores,
nos
damos cuenta que sabemos exactamente

significado de estas palabras.

el saber si nosotros también
tendremos
el valor
de
descender a los infiernos
de nuestras ciudades y nuestro mundo

ofrecerle a los marginados
el
don de la amistad, la dignidad y la vida.
