“A season of watching” / “Una época de vigilar”

“Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. For it will come upon all who live on the face of the whole earth. Be alert at all times, praying that you may have the strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.” – Luke 21:34-36

be on guard, we are told

but our hearts are often burdened

with the dissipation of hostility

the drunkenness of prosperity

and the anxiety of security

be alert, we are asked

but our minds are often dulled

by the dissipation of falsehood

the drunkenness of indoctrination

and the anxiety of belligerence

no wonder we keep missing the signs

of God’s kingdom/kindom bursting in

through simple acts of mercy

and brave gestures of justice and peace

like the defense of the poor

and the protection of refugees

when they show up in Bethlehem

or stand at our borders, begging:

“can you please let us in?”

but Advent is a season of watching

and seeing with the eyes of the heart

the human longing for a new world order

where abundance, sustainability and equity

reconnect and coexist without rivalry

and where believers and nations recommit

to work towards shalom, namaste, paz, salam

in every place, in every land near and far

“Pero tengan cuidado de que su corazón no se recargue de glotonería y embriaguez, ni de las preocupaciones de esta vida, para que aquel día no les sobrevenga de repente. Porque caerá como un lazo sobre todos los que habitan la faz de la tierra. Por lo tanto, manténganse siempre atentos, y oren para que se les considere dignos de escapar de todo lo que habrá de suceder, y de presentarse ante el Hijo del Hombre”. – Lucas 21:34-36

estén alertas, se nos dice

pero nuestros corazones a menudo están sobrecargados

con la dispersión de la hostilidad

la embriaguez de la prosperidad

y la ansiedad de la seguridad

estén atentos, se nos pide

pero nuestras mentes a menudo están entorpecidas

por la dispersión de la falsedad

la embriaguez del adoctrinamiento

y la ansiedad de la beligerancia

con razón se nos escapan las señales

del reino (o la familia) de Dios que irrumpe

con simples actos de misericordia

y valientes gestos de justicia y paz

como la defensa de los pobres

y la protección de los refugiados

cuando se aparecen en Belén

o suplicando aguardan en nuestras fronteras:

“¿podemos pasar o nos dejarán afuera?”

pero Adviento es época de vigilar

y ver con los ojos del corazón

el anhelo humano de un nuevo orden mundial

donde la abundancia, la sostenibilidad  y la equidad

se reconecten y coexistan sin rivalidad

y donde los creyentes y las naciones se comprometan

a trabajar por el shalom, el námaste, la paz, el salam

en tierras cercanas y lejanas, en todo lugar
