“They said yes” / “Dijeron sí”

A reflection based on Luke 1:26-38 and Matthew 1:18-25

It would have been easy
for Mary and Joseph
to say no,
firmly and resoundingly:
no… to the invasion of their privacy,
no… to the disruption of their plans,
no… to the tarnishing of their honor.

But despite the uneasiness
Mary and Joseph
said yes,
quietly and courageously:
yes… to the surrender of their lives,
yes… to the mystery of God’s ways,
yes… to the privilege of service.

And their commitment
to each other and to God
resounds across the ages
as Mary and Joseph
dare us to say yes
boldly and decisively
to the God who is always
knocking at the door
of our hearts,
seeking partners
to do a new thing
on behalf of the world.

It’s easy to say no,
but with every no
long-awaited dreams die,
while with every yes
long-expected futures are born.

“Dijeron sí”

Una reflexión basada en Lucas 1:26-38 y Mateo 1:18-25

Hubiera sido fácil
para María y José
decir no,
firme y rotundamente:
no… a la invasión de su privacidad,
no… a la interrupción de sus planes,
no… al empañamiento de su honor.

Pero a pesar de la incomodidad
María y José
dijeron sí,
callada y valientemente:
sí… a la entrega de sus vidas,
sí… al misterio de los caminos de Dios,
sí… al privilegio del servicio.

Y su compromiso
mutuo y con Dios
resuena a través de las edades
a medida que María y José
nos desafían a decir sí
audaz y decisivamente
al Dios que está siempre
tocando a la puerta
de nuestros corazones,
en busca de acompañantes
para hacer algo nuevo
a favor del mundo.

Es fácil decir no,
pero con cada no
mueren sueños anhelados,
mientras que con cada sí
nacen futuros esperados.
