Spirit of light,
you who in the beginning
moved over the face of the earth
and got rid of the darkness,
move over our lives,
heal us from the blindness
of believing ourselves
to be absolute owners
of the planet and its resources,
and open our eyes
so that we might see
all of humanity 
with your gaze 
of justice and compassion.

Spirit of light,
you who in the gospels
moved among the people
and opened the eyes of the blind,
move over our lives,
heal us from the blindness
of believing ourselves 
to be absolute owners
of the narrative and the truth,
and open our eyes
so that we might see 
all of humanity
with your gaze
of justice and compassion.
Amen.

Espíritu de luz,
tú que en el principio
te moviste sobre la faz de la tierra
y deshiciste la oscuridad,
muévete sobre nuestras vidas,
cúranos de la ceguera
de creernos
dueños absolutos
del planeta y sus recursos,
y abre nuestros ojos
para que podamos ver
a toda la humanidad
con tu mirada
de justicia y compasión

Espíritu de luz,
tú que en los evangelios
te moviste entre la gente
y abriste los ojos de los ciegos,
muévete sobre nuestras vidas,
cúranos de la ceguera
de creernos
dueños absolutos
de la narrativa y la verdad,
y abre nuestros ojos
para que podamos ver
a toda la humanidad
con tu mirada
de justicia y compasión.

“That man and that woman” / “Ese hombre y esa mujer”

A reflection based on John 4:1-42 / Una reflexión basada en Juan 4:1-42

That man in John 4
who sits by the well
taking up space
like he owns the place,
and who offers water
to an unknown woman
who arrives a little later
even though he lacks
a bucket or a rope…
we’ve met him before.

That woman in John 4
who comes to the well delayed,
in the middle of the day,
without aid or companion,
and who dares to question
the intruder who demands
fast and obedient service,
and who asks about his credentials
without being intimidated…|
we need to meet her.

The truth is that each one
had their own thirst
and they needed one other,
because every human being
lacks something
and has much to offer.
And life is full of wells
where we can gather and share
drink and conversation
if we have the humility
to recognize the other person
as a companion on the journey.

Ese hombre de Juan 4
que se sienta junto al pozo
ocupando el espacio
como si fuese dueño del lugar,
y que le ofrece agua
a una mujer desconocida
que llega un poco más tarde
aunque él no tiene
ni soga ni balde…
lo hemos conocido antes.

A esa mujer de Juan 4
que llega al pozo retrasada,
cerca del mediodía,
sin ayuda ni compañía,
y que se atreve a cuestionar
al intruso que demanda
servicio rápido y obediente,
y que indaga sobre sus credenciales
sin dejarse intimidar…
la tenemos que conocer.

La verdad es que cada cual
tenía su propia sed
y se necesitaban mutuamente,
porque todo ser humano
tiene algo que le falta
y mucho que ofrecer.
Y la vida está llena de pozos
donde nos podemos reunir y compartir
bebida y conversación
si tenemos la humildad
de reconocer a la otra persona
como compañera de peregrinaje.
