“A life cut off” / “Una vida cortada”

A Good Friday reflection based on John 18:1-19:42 / Una reflexión de Viernes Santo basada en Juan 18:1-19:42

Jesus: a life cut off
way too early
by lies and misunderstanding,
by cruelty and injustice,
by jealousy and betrayal,
despite having contributed
to the well-being of people
and the advancement of society.

And we live in a world
of lives cut off
way too early
by intolerance and discrimination,
by poverty and imprisonment,
by harassment and deportation,
despite having contributed
to the development of the nation
and the growth of the economy.

But by divine grace
and the effort of the people
there will be a new dawn
free from tyrants and oligarchs
when “those who plant in tears
will harvest with shouts of joy.”[i]

And in order for that day to arrive
we must resist evil
and affirm that we all bear
the image of the Creator
who makes the sun rise
after every long night
of suffering and despair.

Jesús: una vida cortada
demasiado temprano
por la mentira y la incomprensión,
por la crueldad y la injusticia,
por la envidia y la traición,
a pesar de haber contribuido
al bienestar de la gente
y el avance de la sociedad.

Y vivimos en un mundo
de vidas cortadas
demasiado temprano
por la intolerancia y la discriminación,
por la pobreza y el encarcelamiento,
por el acoso y la deportación,
a pesar de haber contribuido
al desarrollo de la nación
y el crecimiento de la economía.

Pero por la gracia divina
y el esfuerzo del pueblo
habrá un nuevo amanecer
libre de tiranos y oligarcas
cuando quienes “siembran con lágrimas
cosecharán con gritos de alegría”[ii].

Y para que llegue ese día
nos toca resistir el mal
y afirmar que todes portamos
la imagen del Creador
que hace salir el sol
después de cada larga noche
de sufrimiento y desesperación.
