“Don’t you care?” / “¿No te importa?”

A reflection based on Mark 4:35-41

Scared by the storm,
fearing for their lives,
the disciples asked,
“Master, don’t you care
that we’re drowning?”
And Jesus got up
without excuse or reproach
and rebuked the wind,
and ordered the sea,
“Peace! Be still!”

And just like the disciples
we turn to God every day
crying out for help,
asking for divine intervention
in the storms of our world
even when we have caused
the winds of injustice to blow
and the waves of inequity to rise.
And we want to hear Jesus
say once again
to the winds and the waves,
“Peace! Be still!”
But Jesus instead says to us,
“Wake up, Church,
don’t you care
that they are drowning?”

“¿No te importa?”

Una reflexión basada en Marcos 4:35-41

Asustados por la tormenta,
temiendo por sus vidas,
los discípulos preguntan,
“Maestro, ¿no te importa
que perezcamos?”
Y Jesús se levantó
sin excusa ni reproche
y reprendió al viento
y le ordenó al mar,
“¡Silencio! ¡Cálmense!”

Y al igual que los discípulos
nos volvemos a Dios cada día
clamando por ayuda,
pidiendo la intervención divina
en las tormentas del mundo
incluso cuando hemos causado
que los vientos de injusticia soplen
y las olas de inequidad se levanten.
Y queremos oír
que Jesús dice otra vez
a los vientos y las olas,
“¡Silencio! ¡Cálmense!”
Pero Jesús en cambio nos dice,
“Despierta, Iglesia,
¿no te importa
que perezcan?”
