“Neighborly love” / “Amor vecinal”

A prayer based on Luke 16:1-13 / Una oración basada en Lucas 16:1-13

God of Creation,
you who provide us
with everything that we need
without charging rent
or imposing interest rate:
the air that we breathe
and the earth that sustains us;
the sun that warms us
and the moon that illuminates us;
the arms that cradle us
and the breasts that feed us;
the homes that care for us
and the communities that protect us;
teach us to live
with your same generosity
so that we might give ourselves
throughout our lives
squandering neighborly love,
without keeping track of the debt
and without demanding a commission.
And grant that when we have
the opportunity to act
on behalf of our siblings
burdened by unfair demands,
we might use our shrewdness
like the dishonest rascal,
to honor your commandments
and to free the borrower and the lender
from the burden of exploitation,
so they might both experience
true freedom and lasting joy,
qualities that in the end
are the greatest wealth.

Dios de la creación,
tú que nos provees
todo lo que necesitamos
sin cobrarnos alquiler
ni imponernos tasa de interés:
el aire que respiramos
y la tierra que nos sostiene;
el sol que nos calienta
y la luna que nos ilumina;
los brazos que nos acunan,
y los pechos que nos amamantan;
los hogares que nos cuidan,
y las comunidades que nos protegen;
enséñanos a vivir
con tu misma generosidad
para que podamos darnos
a lo largo de nuestra vida
derrochando amor vecinal,
sin llevar la cuenta de la deuda
y sin exigir una comisión.
Y concede que cuando tengamos
la oportunidad de actuar
a favor de nuestros semejantes
agobiados por demandas injustas
usemos nuestra astucia,
como el pícaro deshonesto,
para honrar tus mandamientos
y librar al prestatario y al prestamista
de la carga de la explotación,
para que ambos experimenten
libertad verdadera y gozo duradero,
cualidades que en fin de cuentas
son la mayor riqueza.
