The apostle Peter, it seems,
was quite fond of mathematics,
so he spent a great deal of time
crunching numbers alongside dogmatics.
One fine day he tallied up
the number of pardons he had given,
and astounded he began to question
whether everyone should be forgiven.
Just then he had the bright idea
of introducing subtraction,
to avoid an excessive balance
and minimize the transactions.
Fed up with the growing figures,
“Just how many times,” he asked,
should I forgive my brother?”
And the Master quickly tasked:
“Keep on adding, Simon Peter,
and stop being such a pester,
invest in some quality pencils
and get yourself a large eraser.
“All your human interactions
healthy boundaries demand,
protect children, respect women,
be the first to lend a hand.
“Avoid abusive practices
in the name of discipline rules,
seek instead to restore transgressors
without scorn or ridicule.
“Strive to offer forgiveness
in good faith, with sincerity,
seeking reconciliation,
practicing kindness and charity.”

Parece que al apóstol Pedro
le gustaban las matemáticas
y que estaba acostumbrado
a andar ajustando cuentas.
Un buen día hizo la suma
de los perdones otorgados
y llegó a la conclusión
de que ya eran demasiados.
Tuvo entonces la brillante idea
de comenzar a restar
para impedir que aquel monto
se fuese a multiplicar.
Harto de aquellas cifras,
“¿cuántas veces”, preguntó,
“perdonaré a mi hermano?”
Y el Maestro le contestó:
“Sigue sumando, Pedro,
no te hagas tantas preguntas,
consíguete un buen borrador
y cómprate un sacapuntas.
“Pon límites saludables
para la interacción humana,
protege a la niñez, los ancianos,
y respeta a cada hermana.
“Recuerda que la disciplina
no consiste en castigar,
sino en que los transgresores
logren su conducta cambiar.
“Y lo importante al perdonar
es hacerlo de corazón,
actuando de buena fe
y obrando reconciliación”.
