And he said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you fish for people.”  Immediately they left their nets and followed him. – Matthew 4:19-20

You call us to follow you,
but we want to be the center of attention.
You call us to leave the shore,
but we prefer the familiarity of our location.
You call us to approach strangers,
but we opt for communities of segregation.
You call us to leave our nets,
but we cling to any profitable connection.

God of justice and mercy,
loosen the entanglements of our lives,
the misguided loyalties that betray your calling,
and teach us to be a people
of courage, freedom and reconciliation.

Tú nos llamas a seguirte,
pero queremos ser el centro de atención.
Tú nos llamas a salir de la orilla,
pero preferimos la familiaridad de nuestra ubicación.
Tú nos llamas a acercarnos a la gente extraña,
pero optamos por comunidades de segregación.
Tú nos llamas a dejar nuestras redes,
pero nos aferramos a toda lucrativa conexión.

Dios de la justicia y la misericordia,
afloja los enredos de nuestras vidas,
las lealtades erradas que traicionan tu llamado,
y enséñanos a ser un pueblo
de valor, libertad y reconciliación.
