A resource for Sunday’s liturgy based on Luke 13:31-34

nocturnal animal
that stalks his prey
with stealth and patience;
solitary hunter
that pursues his target
with agility and dexterity;
sneaky strategist
who outsmarts his enemy
with malice and snares;
enter Herod into the scene
diurnal creature
that broods over her eggs
with dedication and care;
gregarious protector
that guards her chicks
with loyalty and courage;
trustworthy teacher
who calls her young
with generosity and persistence;
enter Jesus into the scene
and centuries later
the script hasn’t changed:
the fox still threatens
and the hen defends
be it in Jerusalem
or half way across the world
while the chicks run scared
seeking shelter, trying to survive
and repeatedly face
rejection, displacement and abuses
both from the left and the right;
so the question that remains
is not if the nature of the characters
can ever be changed,
but whether the church
in its discourse and its life
will embody either the fox or the hen

“¿El zorro o la gallina?”
Un recurso para la liturgia dominical basado en Lucas 13:31-34

animal nocturno
que acecha su presa
con sigilo y paciencia;
cazador solitario
que persigue su objetivo
con agilidad y destreza;
astuto estratega
que engaña a su enemigo
con malicia y trampas;
entra Herodes en escena
criatura diurna
que empolla sus huevos
con dedicación y esmero;
protectora gregaria
que custodia sus polluelos
con lealtad y valor;
maestra fiable
que llama a sus crías
con creatividad y persistencia;
entra Jesús en escena
y siglos más tarde
el guión sigue sin cambiar:
el zorro no deja de amenazar
y la gallina procura resguardar
ya sea en Jerusalén
o al otro lado del mundo
mientras que los pichones corren asustados
buscando abrigo, tratando de sobrevivir
y repetidamente encaran
rechazo, desplazamiento y abusos
de la derecha y la izquierda por igual;
de modo que la pregunta que resta
no es si la naturaleza de los personajes
podrá alguna vez cambiar,
sino si la iglesia
en su discurso y en su vida
elegirá el zorro o la gallina encarnar
