“And she persisted” / “Y ella persistió”

A reflection based on Matthew 15:21-28 / Una reflexión basada en Mateo 15:21-28

They tried to ignore her,
and she persisted.
They wanted to silence her,
and she persisted.
They intended to dismiss her,
and she persisted.

They insulted her,
and she persisted.
They gave her lame excuses,
and she persisted.
They called her names,
and she persisted.

And thanks to her tenacity
a sick daughter was restored
and a Gentile woman became
the embodiment of the God
who watches over the vulnerable
and bandages their wounds.

And thanks to her perseverance
a possessed daughter was rescued
and a Gentile woman became
the personification of the God
who seeks our liberation
and breaks the chains of oppression.

They tried time after time
to push her aside,
ignoring her plea
and trampling on her dignity,
but she persisted
and in this way
bravely showed us
that the God of life
has not forgotten
any of her children.

Intentaron ignorarla,
y ella persistió.
Quisieron silenciarla,
y ella persistió.
Pretendieron despedirla,
y ella persistió.

La insultaron,
y ella persistió.
Le dieron excusas tontas,
y ella persistió.
La atacaron con nombretes,
y ella persistió.

Y gracias a su tenacidad
una hija enferma fue restaurada
y una mujer gentil se convirtió
en la encarnación del Dios
que vela por los vulnerables
y venda sus heridas.

Y gracias a su persistencia
una hija poseída fue rescatada
y una mujer gentil se convirtió
en la personificación del Dios
que procura nuestra liberación
y rompe las cadenas de opresión.

Intentaron una y otra vez
hacerla a un lado,
desoyendo su pedido
y pisoteando su dignidad,
pero ella persistió
y de ese modo
valientemente demostró
que el Dios de la vida
de ninguna de sus hijas
se ha olvidado.
