“Steady as a rock” / “Constantes como una roca”

A reflection based on Matthew 16:13-20 / Una reflexión basada en Mateo 16:13-20

“You are the Messiah,
the Son of the Living God,”
said Peter to Jesus.
It’s the impetuous answer
offered by Simon son of John,
whose nickname Petros
means stone.

“You are Peter,
and upon this rock
I will build my church,”
said Jesus to Peter.
It’s the clever answer
offered by Jesus,
whom the Scriptures identify
as the cornerstone.

“You are Petros
and upon this petra”
is a play on words
and an unequivocal declaration
that the church is built
not on the shifting, rolling and insecure stone
of fickle disciples and human efforts,
but on the solid, firm and immovable foundation
of the Anointed One, the Word Incarnate,
the rock of Horeb.

Therefore, the only way
to build a life and a church
steady as a rock
is by rejecting the shifting sand
of false ideologies and idolatrous religion,
and standing instead on the solid ground
that is Jesus of Nazareth:
the way, the truth, and the life.

And may we,
like Peter,
the other disciples
and the first women followers of Jesus,
live in such a way
that our everydayness bears witness
to the Loving Rock
which is our anchor,
so that we may not be a stumbling block
and the world might believe
that we serve the God of Life.

“Tú eres el Mesías,
el Hijo del Dios viviente”,
le dijo Pedro a Jesús.
Es la respuesta impetuosa
ofrecida por Simón hijo de Juan,
cuyo apodo Petros
significa piedra.

“Tú eres Pedro,
y sobre esta roca
edificaré mi iglesia”,
le dijo Jesús a Pedro.
Es la respuesta astuta
ofrecida por Jesús,
a quien las Escrituras identifican
como la piedra angular.

“Tú eres Petros
y sobre esta petra”
es un juego de palabras
y una declaración inequívoca
de que la iglesia se construye
no sobre la piedra cambiante, rodante e insegura
de discípulos volubles y esfuerzos humanos,
sino sobre el cimiento sólido, firme e inmovible
del Ungido, el Verbo Humanado,
la Peña de Horeb.

Por tanto, la única manera
de construir una vida y una iglesia
constantes como una roca
es rechazando la arena movediza
de las ideologías falsas y la religión idólatra,
y afianzándose en cambio en el terreno sólido
que es Jesús de Nazaret:
el camino, la verdad y la vida.

Y ojalá que nosotres,
al igual que Pedro,
los otros discípulos
y las primeras seguidoras de Jesús,
vivamos de forma tal
que nuestra cotidianeidad dé testimonio
de la Roca Amorosa
que es nuestra ancla,
para que no seamos piedra de tropiezo
y el mundo crea
que servimos al Dios de la Vida.
