“We want to see Jesus” / “Queremos ver a Jesús”

A reflection based on John 12:20-26 / Una reflexión basada en Juan 12:20-26

“We want to see Jesus”,
said some Greeks worshipers
who had gone to the temple
and were eager to meet
the unconventional teacher
who offered healing and hope
to those suffering a living death.

“We want to see Jesus”,
say the spiritual seekers
who come to our temples
and are eager to meet
the revolutionary prophet
who offers freedom and renewal
to those enduring a living hell.

And Jesus’ response
is still astonishing,
for believers and seekers alike:
“Do not look for me
among the massive stones
of grandiose temples
or ornate chapels.
Look for me among the furrows
of civil protest and legislative reform,
where eager hands are sowing
seeds of equity and dignity.”

The challenge is to look outward,
to plant ourselves alongside the meek,
to water efforts to break the chains,
and to bear fruits of justice and peace,
until the day when all peoples
raise their voices and joyfully say:
“We have seen Jesus in your works,
in the absence of bombs and aggressions,
in the defense of human rights
and the solidarity with all nations.”

“Queremos ver a Jesús”,
dijeron algunos griegos adoradores
que acudieron al templo
y estaban deseosos de conocer
al maestro inconformista
que ofrecía sanidad y esperanza
a la gente que estaba muerta en vida.

“Queremos ver a Jesús”,
dicen los buscadores espirituales
que acuden a nuestros templos
y están deseosos de conocer
al profeta revolucionario
que ofrece libertad y renovación
a la gente que soporta un infierno viviente.

Y la respuesta de Jesús
sigue siendo sorprendente
para creyentes y curiosos por igual:
“No me busquen vanamente
entre las piedras macizas
de templos grandiosos
o capillas ornamentadas.
Búsquenme entre los surcos
de protestas civiles y reformas legislativas,
donde manos ávidas siembran
semillas de equidad y dignidad”.

El reto es mirar hacia afuera,
plantarnos junto a la gente humilde,
regar los esfuerzos por romper las cadenas,
y dar frutos de justicia y paz,
hasta el día en que todos los pueblos
alcen sus voces y con júbilo digan:
“Hemos visto a Jesús en sus obras,
en la ausencia de bombas y agresiones,
en la defensa de los derechos humanos
y la solidaridad con todas las naciones”.
