“Inside and within” / “Dentro y adentro”

 A reflection based on Mark 1:21-28

It was inside,
the unclean spirit
that felt threatened.
It was in the synagogue,
the unclean spirit
that felt attacked.
It was among the devout,
the unclean spirit
that felt displaced.

It was within,
the divine spirit
that had baptized him.
It was with Jesus,
the divine spirit
that had sent him.
It was in his discourse,
the divine spirit
that had empowered him.

They are always inside and within,
in church and in our hearts,
these two competing powers,
the force of evil and that of good,
attracting attention,
claiming loyalty,
demanding the front pew.

And when life flows quietly,
without grievance or objection,
without struggle or confrontation,
it’s not because we have reached
the summit of faithfulness,
the apex of integrity,
or the peak of consecration,
but perhaps because we yielded ground
to impurity, evil and corruption.

“Dentro y adentro”

Una reflexión basada en Marcos 1:21-28

Estaba dentro,
el espíritu impuro
que se sintió amenazado.
Estaba en la sinagoga,
el espíritu impuro
que se sintió atacado.
Estaba entre los devotos,
el espíritu impuro
que se sintió desplazado.

Estaba en sus adentros,
el espíritu divino
que lo había bautizado.
Estaba con Jesús,
el espíritu divino
que lo había enviado.
Estaba en su discurso,
el espíritu divino
que lo había empoderado.

Siempre están dentro y adentro,
en la iglesia y en nuestro corazón,
compitiendo esos dos poderes,
la fuerza del mal y la del bien,
llamando la atención,
exigiendo la primera banca,
reclamando lealtad.

Y cuando la vida transcurre en calma,
sin reclamo ni objeción,
sin lucha ni confrontación,
no es porque hallamos alcanzado
la cima de la fidelidad,
la cúspide de la integridad,
o la cumbre de la consagración,
sino quizás porque cedimos terreno
a la impureza, la maldad y la corrupción.
