“Questions and answers” / “Preguntas y respuestas”

A reflection based on John 1:35-42 / Una reflexión basada en Juan 1:35-42

“What do you want?”,
Jesus asked John’s disciples
who followed him.
It’s a fair and honest question,
and an important one.
It’s a question we should ask
of people who show up at church,
because it cuts to the chase
and invites deep reflection
about what one truly desires
from others and from life.

“Teacher”, they replied,
acknowledging at least
that they admired his knowledge
and expected to learn from him.
And then they dared ask,
“where do you stay?”
And I wonder,
is that a way of saying,
“where are you from?”
and “what do you do for a living?”
Or is it a way of asking,
“where does your presence reside?”
Is it a question uttered
simply to make conversation
or out of a genuine desire
for an encounter with the God of life?

“Come and see,” Jesus said.
And they went.
And they followed him.
And they stayed for a long while.
And this was the spark of a relationship.
And this was the start of a community.
And this was the beginning of a narrative
about the One who “has no place 
even to lay his head”,
but who can always be found
on the margins and on the road
among those who long for
shelter and protection,
hope and liberation.

“¿Qué quieren?”,
le preguntó Jesús a los discípulos de Juan
que lo seguían.
Es una pregunta justa y honesta,
y una que resulta importante.
Es una pregunta que deberíamos hacer
a la gente que se asoma por la Iglesia,
porque va al grano
e invita a la reflexión profunda
sobre lo que en verdad deseamos
de las demás personas y de la vida.

“Maestro”, le contestaron,
reconociendo al menos
que admiraban su conocimiento
y esperaban aprender de él.
Y entonces se atrevieron a preguntar,
“¿dónde te hospedas?”
Y yo me pregunto,
es esa otra manera de decir,
“¿de dónde vienes?”
y “¿a qué te dedicas?”
O es una manera de preguntar,
“¿dónde reside tu presencia?”
¿Será una pregunta formulada
simplemente para entablar conversación
o nacida del deseo genuino
de un encuentro con el Dios de la vida?

“Venga y vean”, les dijo Jesús.
Y fueron.
Y lo siguieron.
Y se quedaron un largo rato.
Y esa fue la chispa que encendió una relación.
Y ese fue el comienzo de una comunidad.
Y ese fue el principio de una narrativa
sobre Aquel que “no tiene lugar 
donde reposar su cabeza”,
pero que siempre puede hallarse
en los márgenes y en el camino
entre la gente que anhela
refugio y protección,
esperanza y liberación.
