“We say that you are” / “Decimos que eres”

A confession based on Mark 8:27-38

We say that you are
the Christ, the Messiah,
but we bow down
before oppressive powers
and anoint them with votes,
praise or complicit silence.

We say that you are
the Lord and Master,
but we sit at the feet
of hateful powers
that teach followers
to despise their neighbors.

We say that you are
the Light of the World,
but we align ourselves
with deceitful powers
that spread gloom
through distortions and shady deals.

We say that you are
the Prince of Peace,
but we pledge allegiance
to divisive powers
that incite violence,
build walls and wage wars.

We say that you are
the Way, the Truth and the Life,
but follow the path
of destructive powers
that disseminate lies
and sow suffering and death.

Forgive us, God of Mercy
for saying all the right things
while our lives often reveal
our failure to surrender to your will.
Help us, God of the Cross,
to follow wherever you may lead
sacrificing selfishness and pride
for the well-being of all humankind.

“Decimos que eres”

Una confesión basada en Marcos 8:27-38

Decimos que eres
el Cristo, el Mesías,
pero nos postramos
ante poderes opresores
y los ungimos con votos,
halagos o silencio cómplice.

Decimos que eres
el Señor y Maestro,
pero nos sentamos a los pies
de poderes odiosos
que enseñan a los seguidores
a despreciar a sus vecinos.

Decimos que eres
la Luz del Mundo,
pero nos alineamos
con poderes engañosos
que esparcen tinieblas
con distorsiones y negocios turbios.

Decimos que eres
el Príncipe de Paz,
pero juramos lealtad
a poderes divisivos
que incitan a la violencia,
levantan muros y hacen la guerra.

Decimos que eres
el Camino, la Verdad y la Vida,
pero seguimos la senda
de los poderes destructivos
que diseminan mentiras
y siembran sufrimiento y muerte.

Perdónanos, Dios de Misericordia,
por decir todas las cosas correctas
mientras que nuestras vidas revelan
que fallamos en cumplir con tu voluntad.
Ayúdanos, Dios del Madero,
a seguirte doquiera nos conduzcas
sacrificando el egoísmo y el orgullo
por el bienestar de la dolida humanidad.

“At the same time” / “A la misma vez”

 A reflection based on Mark 7:24-30

That Greek woman,
who was Syrophoenician by birth,
knew that plurality
is not a bad thing,
but quite the opposite.

She had lived
something Jesus had to learn:
that one can be cross-cultural,
Greek and Syrian, Gentile and believer
at the same time.

And she challenges us
to move beyond the binaries
that classify and divide;
to accept the diversity
that is part of God’s design;
to seek a deeper understanding
in our pursuit of justice and truth;
and to promote dialogue and convergence
for the sake of all humankind.

She challenges us to consider
that one can be…
pro vaccine and pro personal freedom
at the same time;
pro abortion and pro life
at the same time;
pro Black Lives Matter and pro other races
at the same time;
against homophobia and against indecency
at the same time;
against immigrant detention and against open borders
at the same time;
against embargo and against totalitarianism
at the same time.

Save us, Jesus of Calvary,
you who embodied duality,
from crucifying the alleged opposition
without listening to its reasons
nor evaluating the ways
in which together
we can build a world
of greater equity and compassion.

“A la misma vez”

Una reflexión basada en Marcos 7:24-30

Esa mujer griega,
de nacionalidad sirofenicia,
sabía que la pluralidad
no es algo malo,
sino todo lo contrario.

Ella había vivido
algo que Jesús tuvo que aprender:
que se puede ser intercultural,
griega y siria, gentil y creyente
a la misma vez.

Y ella nos reta
a dejar atrás los binarios
que clasifican y dividen;
a aceptar la diversidad
que diseñó la Divinidad;
a procurar un mejor entendimiento
en aras de la justicia y la verdad;
y a promover el diálogo y la convergencia
por el bien de la humanidad.

Ella nos reta a considerar
que podemos estar…
a favor de las vacunas y las libertades personales
a la misma vez;
a favor del aborto y de la vida
a la misma vez;
a favor de las vidas negras y otras razas
a la misma vez;
en contra de la homofobia y la indecencia
a la misma vez;
en contra de la detención de inmigrantes y las fronteras abiertas
a la misma vez;
en contra del embargo y el totalitarismo
a la misma vez.

Sálvanos, Jesús del Calvario,
tú que encarnaste la dualidad,
de crucificar a la supuesta oposición
antes de escuchar sus razones
y valorar la medida en la cual
juntos, juntas, juntes
podemos construir un mundo
de mayor equidad y compasión.
