When we are tempted by the illusion
that longer prayers are proof of our piety,
Jesus says to us:
“Get up, get out and get down to serve.”

When we are tempted by the arrogance
of thinking that belief and praise are enough,
Jesus says to us:
“Get up, get out and get down to serve.”

When we are tempted by the privilege
of fulfilled needs and satisfied wants,
Jesus says to us:
“Get up, get out and get down to serve.”

When we are tempted by the comfort
of padded pews and secure church walls,
Jesus says to us:
“Get up, get out and get down to serve.”

So let us resist the temptation
to turn inward
in our search for the divine,
to turn a blind eye
to the violations of human rights,
and to turn our backs
on the cries for justice and liberty.
Let us instead seek
a true revival of the spirit
by obeying the voice of the one who says to us:
“Get up, get out and get down to serve.”

Una letanía basada en Mateo 17:1-9

Cuando nos tienta la ilusión
de que las oraciones largas son prueba de nuestra piedad,
Jesús nos dice:
“Levántense, salgan y apréstense a servir”.

Cuando nos tienta la arrogancia
de pensar que las creencias y las alabanzas son suficientes,
Jesús nos dice:
“Levántense, salgan y apréstense a servir”.

Cuando nos tienta el privilegio
de necesidades suplidas y deseos satisfechos,
Jesús nos dice:
“Levántense, salgan y apréstense a servir”.

Cuando nos tienta la comodidad
de bancas acojinadas y templos amurallados,
Jesús nos dice:
“Levántense, salgan y apréstense a servir”.

Así que resistamos la tentación
de mirar hacia adentro
en busca de la divinidad,
de hacernos de la vista gorda
ante la violación de los derechos humanos,
y de darle la espalda
a los gritos de justicia y libertad.
Procuremos, por el contrario,
un avivamiento verdadero del espíritu
al obedecer la voz de aquel que nos dice:
“Levántense, salgan y apréstense a servir”.
