“A surplus of silence” / “Sobran silencios”

A reflection based on Mark 10:46-52

The sick cry out longing for healing.
The hungry cry out longing for fullness.
The harassed cry out longing for respect.
The abused cry out longing for protection.
The marginalized cry out longing for inclusion.
The oppressed cry out longing for freedom.

They all cry out in desperation
hoping for an answer,
a helping hand, a solution.

And all that shouting is a nuisance
for the powerful and the comfortable,
who subvert the just demands
with ruthless laws
and shameful silence.

But the Bartimaeus of our world
do not cry out in vain
for although there is a surplus of silence
surrounding their suffering,
and relentless measures
to muzzle and defame them,
God hears their cries
and has compassion;
the bushes are still burning
for those who pay attention.

“Sobran silencios”

Una reflexión basada en Marcos 10:46-52

Gritan los enfermos anhelando sanidad.
Gritan los hambrientos anhelando saciedad.
Gritan los hostigados anhelando estimación.
Gritan los maltratados anhelando protección.
Gritan los marginados anhelando inclusividad.
Gritan los oprimidos anhelando libertad.

Gritan a coro, con desesperación,
en busca de una respuesta,
una mano amiga, una solución.

Y esa gritería resulta fastidiosa
para los poderosos y los acomodados,
que socavan los reclamos justos
con leyes implacables
y silencios vergonzosos.

Mas no gritan en vano
los Bartimeos de este mundo,
pues aunque sobran silencios
en torno a su sufrimiento,
y medidas despiadadas
para amordazarlos y difamarlos,
Dios oye sus gritos
y tiene compasión;
las zarzas siguen ardiendo
para quienes prestan atención.
