“The beauty of surrender” / “La belleza de entregarse”

Attaching,
this we know how to do,
because we have been taught
that our identity and destiny
are tied to what we embrace.

Clinging,
this we tend to do,
because we have been told
that our safety and our prosperity
are assured by what we possess.

But the wonder of life
will escape us
unless we are able
to accept the mystery
that it is in relinquishing that we gain.

To be a seed
that is buried and then germinates
so that a plant can emerge:
this is the calling
that Jesus extends,
and this is the secret
to abundant life.

To be a caterpillar
that pupates and then ecloses
so that a butterfly can emerge:
this is the calling
that Jesus extends,
and this is the secret
to fullness of life.

God of the seed,
take away our fear of risk and sacrifice,
and show us the beauty of surrender.
God of the caterpillar,
take away our fear of change and transformation,
and show us the possibility of life.

Apegarnos,
esto sabemos hacer,
porque se nos ha enseñado
que nuestra identidad y destino
están ligados a lo que abrazamos.

Aferrarnos,
esto solemos hacer,
porque se nos ha dicho
que nuestra seguridad y prosperidad
están ancladas en lo que acumulamos.

Pero la maravilla de la vida
se nos escapará
a menos que podamos
aceptar el misterio
de que es al renunciar que ganamos.

Ser semilla
que se entierra y luego germina
para que surja la planta:
este es el llamado
que nos extiende Jesús
y este es el secreto
de la vida en abundancia.

Ser oruga
que se encierra y luego eclosiona
para que surja la mariposa:
este es el llamado
que nos extiende Jesús
y este es el secreto
de la vida en plenitud.

Dios de la semilla,
líbranos del miedo al riesgo y el sacrificio,
y muéstranos la belleza de la entrega.
Dios de la oruga,
líbranos del miedo al cambio y la transformación
y muéstranos la posibilidad de la vida.

“Get out of here” / “Vete de aquí”

A prayer based on Matthew 4:1-11 / Una oración basada en Mateo 4:1-11

When we are tempted
to act selfishly,
thinking only of our own needs,
grant us, O God, the courage to say:
“Get out of here, Satan.”

When we are tempted
to act irresponsibly,
attributing to others the course of our lives,
grant us, O God, the courage to say:
“Get out of here, Satan.”

When we are tempted
and to act foolishly,
pledging loyalty to deceptive powers,
grant us, O God, the courage to say:
“Get out of here, Satan.”

For only then,
O God of Wisdom and Justice,
will we be able to experience
the lasting joy and peace that come
from weaving a community of sharing,
from taking responsibility for our deeds
and from choosing truth and mercy.

Cuando sentimos la tentación
de actuar egoístamente,
pensando sólo en nuestras propias necesidades,
concédenos, oh Dios, el valor de decir:
“Vete de aquí, Satanás”.

Cuando sentimos la tentación
de actuar irresponsablemente,
achacando a los demás el rumbo de nuestra vida,
concédenos, oh Dios, el valor de decir:
“Vete de aquí, Satanás”.

Cuando sentimos la tentación
de actuar insensatamente,
rindiendo lealtad a poderes engañosos,
concédenos, oh Dios, el valor de decir:
“Vete de aquí, Satanás”.

Porque sólo así,
oh Dios de Sabiduría y Justicia,
podremos experimentar
el gozo y la paz perdurables que llegan
al tejer una comunidad de compartición,
al responsabilizarnos por nuestros actos
y al elegir la verdad y la misericordia.
