Bear fruits worthy of repentance. Do not begin to say to yourselves, 'We have Abraham as our ancestor'; for I tell you, God is able from these stones to raise up children to Abraham. – Luke 3:8

“What should we do?”,
asked the crowds,
as if they didn’t already know
what Moses had taught
and the prophets had proclaimed.

“What should we do?”,
ask today’s believers,
as if we didn’t already know
what Jesus has taught
and the Scriptures have proclaimed.

Sometimes we ask questions
because we seek direction
when we truly don’t know
how to embody God’s affection.

But often we ask questions
simply to get off the hook,
when we already know
what’s been written in the Book.

God of the Grain and the Weed,
remove from our lives
all ignorance, apathy and hypocrisy.
Give us vision and courage to bear fruits
of justice and mercy,
and to live in such a way
that all your creatures may rejoice
and exult your holy name.

“¿Qué debemos hacer?”,
preguntó la multitud,
como si no supiera de antemano
lo que Moisés había enseñado
y lo que los profetas habían proclamado.

“¿Qué debemos hacer?”,
preguntan los creyentes de hoy,
como si no supiéramos de antemano
lo que Jesús ha enseñado
y lo que las Escrituras han proclamado.

A veces hacemos preguntas
porque buscamos dirección
cuando en verdad no sabemos
como encarnar la compasión.

Pero a menudo hacemos preguntas
simplemente para esquivar la censura,
cuando en realidad ya sabemos
lo que nos encomiendan las Escrituras.

Dios del Grano y la Cizaña,
remueve de nuestras vidas
toda ignorancia, apatía e hipocresía.
Danos visión y valor para dar frutos
de justicia y misericordia,
y para vivir de forma tal
que todas tus criaturas se puedan regocijar
y tu santo nombre por siempre exaltar.

And let us remember to welcome
the strangers who come to our door,
for thus we prepare the way of the Lord.

Let us wrap presents in shiny paper
or tamales in banana leaves,
as we prepare to celebrate Christmas.
And let us remember to embrace
the outsiders who yearn to belong,
for thus we prepare the way of the Lord.

Let us offer cookies and milk to Santa Claus
or gather grass for the Three Kings’ camels,
as we prepare to celebrate Christmas.
And let us remember to host
the aliens who hunger for acceptance,
for thus we prepare the way of the Lord.

Let us sing our favorite carols
or take part in pageants and posadas,
as we prepare to celebrate Christmas.
And let us remember to safeguard
the foreigners who live in the shadows,
for thus we prepare the way of the Lord.

Let us give donations to the poor
or support charitable causes,
as we prepare to celebrate Christmas.
And let us remember to defend
the immigrants who labor in our midst,
for thus we prepare the way of the Lord.

o una guirnalda en las escaleras y el árbol,
a medida que nos preparamos para celebrar la Navidad.
Y recordemos recibir
a los desconocidos que llegan a nuestra puerta,
porque así preparamos el camino del Señor.

Envolvamos los regalos en papel reluciente
o los tamales en hojas de plátano,
a medida que nos preparamos para celebrar la Navidad.
Y recordemos cobijar
a las fuereñas que anhelan ser incluidas,
porque así preparamos el camino del Señor.

Ofrezcamos galletas y leche a Papá Noel
o juntemos yerba para los camellos de los Reyes Magos,
a medida que nos preparamos para celebrar la Navidad.
Y recordemos alojar
a los extranjeros que ansían hallar aceptación,
