“A dangerous trap” / “Una trampa peligrosa”

Jesus predicted that he would suffer
many terrible things
at the hands of “the elders,
the leading priests,
and the teachers of religious law.”

Some things never change.
Patriarchs—and their cronies—
will always be invested
in upholding at all cost
a system that benefits them
while placing heavy burdens
on the rest of the people,
especially the marginalized.
And anyone who dares
challenge systemic injustice
will inevitably experience rejection
and endure unjust suffering.

And we, like Peter,
must learn to align ourselves
with the voices and the movements
that have at their heart
not greed and self-preservation,
but well-being and prosperity
for all human beings;
not exploitation and domination,
but dignity and liberation
for all the people.

And when we, like Peter,
fall into the dangerous trap
of seeking to preserve our own life
and our beloved institutions,
instead of surrendering ourselves
and investing our vast resources
in loving service
for the benefit of all creation,
we fail to see things
from God’s point of view.

And when we, like Peter,
are reluctant to take up our own cross,
trying to avoid the suffering
that is a consequence of following Jesus,
indulging and pampering ourselves
while placing heavy crosses
on the backs of vulnerable people,
may we hear the voice of Jesus
that resounds like thunder saying to us:
“Get away from me, Satan!”

Jesus also predicted
that “he would be killed,
but on the third day
he would be raised from the dead,”
because the gospel is a fertile seed
that always sprouts and blossoms
despite adverse climate and weeds.

May we, unlike Peter,
be the kind of disciples
who eagerly and willingly
fall into the furrow,
germinate in due season
and yield abundant fruit,
instead of rotting away
in the safety of a barn
while the world hungers
for bread, hope and freedom.

Jesús predijo “que sufriría
muchas cosas terribles
a manos de los ancianos,
de los principales sacerdotes
y de los maestros de la ley religiosa”.

Algunas cosas nunca cambian.
Los patriarcas—y sus compinches—
siempre estarán interesados
en sostener a toda costa
un sistema que les beneficia
mientras ponen pesadas cargas
sobre el resto de la gente,
especialmente la marginada.
Y cualquiera que se atreva
a retar la injusticia sistémica
inevitablemente experimentará rechazo
y soportará sufrimiento injusto.

Y nosotres, como Pedro,
debemos aprender a alinearnos
con las voces y los movimientos
que tienen en su corazón
no avaricia y autopreservación,
sino bienestar y prosperidad
para todo ser humano;
no explotación y dominación,
sino dignidad y liberación
para todo el pueblo.

Y cuando nosotres, al igual que Pedro,
caemos en la trampa peligrosa
de intentar preservar nuestra propia vida
y nuestras amadas instituciones
en vez de entregarnos
y de invertir nuestros vastos recursos
en servicio amoroso
para beneficio de toda la creación,
fallamos en ver las cosas
desde el punto de vista de Dios.

Y cuando nosotres, al igual que Pedro,
somos reacios a tomar nuestra propia cruz,
procurando esquivar el sufrimiento
que es consecuencia de seguir a Jesús,
consintiéndonos y apapachándonos
mientras ponemos pesadas cruces
sobre la espalda de la gente vulnerable,
ojalá oigamos la voz de Jesús
que resuena cual trueno y nos dice:
“¡Aléjate de mí, Satanás!”

Jesús también predijo
que “lo matarían,
pero al tercer día resucitaría”,
porque el evangelio es semilla fértil
que siempre brota y florece
a pesar del clima adverso y la maleza.

Ojalá que, a diferencia de Pedro,
seamos el tipo de discípulos
que ansiosa y voluntariamente
caen en el surco,
germinan a su tiempo
y dan abundante fruto,
en vez de podrirse
en la seguridad del granero
mientras el mundo padece hambre
de pan, esperanza y libertad.
