“It was still dark” / “Todavía estaba oscuro”

A litany based on Luke 24:1-12 and John 20:1-18

It was still dark
when Mary Magdalene,
Joanna, Mary the mother of James,
and several other women,
despite their grief and their fears,
left the comfort of their homes
and headed to the tomb
carrying spices to anoint the body
of their beloved friend Jesus,
so he could at least
have a dignified burial.

It is still dark
for many people around us
who are hurting, marginalized and forgotten,
trapped in the tombs
of injustice and oppression,
and the world needs early risers
like those women of the gospels,
who are willing to step out in faith,
even while it is still dark,
and dare, against all odds,
to engage in good deeds of mercy
and prophetic actions of liberation.

On this Easter day,
even while it is still dark,
may we renew our commitment
to move beyond grief and fears,
to step out in compassionate service,
and together build a world
where it won’t be dark any longer,
because we reflect the life-giving light
of the Risen Christ.

“Todavía estaba oscuro”

Una letanía basada en Lucas 24:1-12 y Juan 20:1-18

Todavía estaba oscuro
cuando María Magdalena,
Juana, María la madre de Santiago,
y varias otras mujeres,
a pesar de su duelo y sus miedos,
dejaron la comodidad de sus casas
y fueron a la tumba
llevando especias para ungir el cuerpo
de su amado amigo Jesús,
para que al menos tuviese
un entierro digno.

Todavía está oscuro
para mucha gente a nuestro alrededor
que está dolida, marginada y olvidada,
atrapada en las tumbas
de la injusticia y la opresión,
y el mundo necesita gente madrugadora
como esas mujeres de los evangelios,
que estén dispuestas a salir por fe,
incluso cuando todavía está oscuro,
y se atrevan, a pesar de todo,
a involucrarse en buenas obras de misericordia
y gestos proféticos de liberación.

En este día de Pascua,
incluso aunque todavía está oscuro,
ojalá renovemos nuestro compromiso
de sobrepasar el duelo y el miedo,
de salir a ofrecer servicio compasivo
y de juntos construir un mundo
donde ya no habrá oscuridad
porque reflejamos la luz vivificadora
del Cristo resucitado.
