de otoño desde mi balcón
The sun moved,
or so it seems,
because the sunsets
are no longer
in the same spot.
But in reality
it’s an optical illusion.
It was the earth that moved;
it turned on its own axis
and around the sun,
and its slight tilt
causes the sun to be seen
further north in summer
and further south in winter.
And I wonder,
if the earth moves
around the sun,
the stars move
around the galaxy
and the universe itself
is in constant movement,
why is it so difficult
for human beings and governments
to move just a bit?
Why is it so difficult
to yield and cooperate
for the sake of the whole
and for the common good?
God of creation
help us to honor
your image and likeness
by cultivating cooperation,
knowing that the world’s future
and our own survival
demand harmony and reciprocity.
Wake us up from the fantasy
that leads us to believe that alone
or at the expense of others
we can find true joy
and lasting prosperity.
And heal us from the selfishness
that blinds us to the horror of aggression
against our own country and the earth,
and the futility of conflicts and wars,
forgetting that we are interdependent
and that when we attack or neglect our neighbor
we crucify our own well-being,
we sacrifice our own liberty
and we renounce our own happiness.
Amen.

El sol se movió
o al menos eso parece,
porque los atardeceres
ya no iluminan mi balcón
del mismo modo.
Pero en verdad se trata
de una ilusión óptica.
Fue la tierra la que se movió;
giró sobre su propio eje
y alrededor del sol,
y su ligera inclinación
hace que el sol se vea
más al norte en verano
y más al sur en invierno.
Y yo me pregunto,
si la tierra se mueve
alrededor del sol,
las estrellas se mueven
alrededor de la galaxia
y el universo mismo
está en constante movimiento,
¿por qué nos resulta tan difícil
a los seres humanos y los gobiernos
moverse un poco?
¿Por qué nos cuesta tanto
ceder y cooperar
en aras de la totalidad
y por el bien común?
Dios de la creación,
ayúdanos a honrar
tu imagen y semejanza
al cultivar la cooperación,
sabiendo que el futuro del mundo
y nuestro propia sobrevivencia
exigen armonía y reciprocidad.
Despiértanos de la fantasía
que nos hace creer que a solas
o a expensas de los demás
podemos hallar verdadero gozo
y duradera prosperidad.
Y cúranos del
egoísmo
que nos ciega al horror de la agresión
en contra de nuestro propio país y la tierra,
y la futilidad de los conflictos y las guerras,
olvidando que
somos interdependientes
y que al agredir o descuidar a nuestro prójimo
crucificamos nuestro propio bienestar,
sacrificamos nuestra propia libertad
y renunciamos a nuestra propia felicidad.
