“The traitor” / “El traidor”

A reflection based on Matthew 26:14-25, Matthew 27:1-10 and John 13:21-32

He went down in history
as the guy with the money bag,
the thief, the traitor,
the disciple who gave the feigned kiss,
the one whose life philosophy
apparently consisted
of giving everyone
tit for tat.

And when he felt disappointed
by the teacher from Nazareth
because the dream of liberation
from Roman domination
had not been realized,
Judas decided to defect
and sold Jesus
for thirty silver coins,
although Matthew says that later,
in remorse,
tortured by a guilty conscience,
he took his own life
and he hanged himself.

But every Holy Week
as we read the Passion story
we’re looking into a mirror
and we see the clear reflection
of the dark side of humanity,
because the same Satan
who found a place with Judas
lodges itself each single day
in our own intentions,
our pocketbooks
and our lives.

Every time we act
moved by self interest
without taking into account
the damage we cause to our neighbor;
or every time we collaborate
with the forces of evil
be it through complicit silence
or as allies of a tyrannical regime,
we too are abandoning the values
that we claim to spouse
and betraying, just like Judas,
Jesus our teacher, friend and brother.

“El traidor”

Una reflexión basada en Mateo 26:14-25, Mateo 27:1-10 y Juan 13:21-32

Pasó a la historia
como el tipo de la bolsa del dinero,
el ladrón, el traidor,
el discípulo del beso fingido,
aquel cuya filosofía de vida
aparentemente fue
“con la misma moneda que pagas,
te pago”.

Y al sentirse defraudado
por el maestro de Nazaret
porque el sueño de liberación
de la dominación romana
no se había realizado,
Judas decidió desertar,
y vendió a Jesús
por treinta monedas de plata,
aunque cuenta Mateo que luego,
por remordimiento,
por su propia conciencia torturado,
se quitó la vida
y murió ahorcado.

Pero cada Semana Santa
al leer los relatos de la Pasión
nos miramos al espejo
y allí vemos el claro reflejo
del lado oscuro de nuestro corazón.
Porque el mismo Satanás
que en Judas halló cabida
se acomoda diariamente
en nuestras intenciones,
en nuestros bolsillos
y en nuestras vidas.

Cada vez que actuamos
en base a nuestro propio interés
sin tomar en consideración
el daño que al prójimo causamos;
o cada vez que colaboramos
con las fuerzas del mal
ya sea con silencio cómplice
o como aliados de un régimen tirano,
estamos abandonando los valores
que supuestamente respaldamos
y traicionando, igual que Judas,
a Jesús el maestro, amigo y hermano.
