“About the future” / “Acerca del futuro”

A reflection based on Mark 13:1-8

Like the disciples of long ago
we also want to know
about the future,
because knowledge is power
and we like to be in control.
But Jesus does not satisfy
our curiosity
and instead warns us
that we should be on guard,
for many will come in his name
forecasting the end of the world.
So rather than join the chorus
of end-of-times merchants,
let us work to build a world
according to God’s purpose
by taking responsibility
for the calamities we have caused
to the earth and human beings,
and in this way avoid becoming
false prophets of doom.
The only thing we need to know
about the future
we already know:
that God will be there,
just as God was in the beginning,
bringing order to the chaos,
creating the conditions
where all creatures can flourish,
and inviting us once again
to be partners for life.

“Acerca del futuro”

Una reflexión basada en Marcos 13:1-8

Al igual que los discípulos de antaño
nosotres también queremos saber
acerca del futuro,
porque el conocimiento es poder
y nos gusta estar en control.
Pero Jesús no satisface
nuestra curiosidad
y por el contrario nos advierte
que debemos estar alertas,
porque muchos vendrán en su nombre
anunciando el fin del mundo.
Así que en vez de unirnos al coro
de mercaderes del final de los tiempos,
trabajemos para construir
un mundo acorde con el propósito de Dios
asumiendo responsabilidad
por las calamidades que hemos causado
a la tierra y los seres humanos,
y de ese modo evitar convertirnos
en falsos profetas de la fatalidad.
Todo lo que necesitamos saber
acerca del futuro
ya lo sabemos:
que Dios estará allí,
como estuvo en el principio,
trayendo orden al caos,
creando las condiciones
donde todas las criaturas puedan prosperar,
e invitándonos nuevamente
a ser colaboradores de la vida.
