“A reversal” / “Un revés”

A liturgical resource based on Luke 6:17-26

“Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
But woe to you who are rich,
for you have received your consolation.”
We like the blessings,
not so much the woes;
we like it when Jesus blesses us,
not when he curses our hoarding
of wealth and resources.

“Blessed are you who are hungry now,
for you will be filled.
Woe to you who are full now,
for you will be hungry.”
We like the blessings,
not so much the woes;
we like it when Jesus feeds us,
not when he curbs our appetite
for power and control.

“Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
Woe to you who are laughing now,
for you will mourn and weep.”
We like the blessings,
not so much the woes;
we like it when Jesus comforts us,
not when he stirs our conscience
regarding suffering and abuse.

“Blessed are you when people hate you,
and when they exclude you, revile you,
and defame you on account of the Son of Man.
Woe to you when all speak well of you,
for that is what their ancestors did to the false prophets.”
We like the blessings,
not so much the woes;
we like it when Jesus praises us,
not when he rebukes our rhetoric
full of deceit and pride.

JESUS ON THE PLAIN,
you who stood with the crowd,
you who welcomed the foreigner and the friend,
remind us that the salvation you proclaimed
entails a reversal of the social order,
a true liberation, an era of jubilee,
until our lives and the whole world
reflect your holy purpose
and all creatures live in harmony.

“Un revés”

Un recurso litúrgico basado en Lucas 6:17-26

“Bienaventurados ustedes los pobres,
porque el reino de Dios les pertenece.
Pero ¡ay de ustedes los ricos!,
porque ya han recibido su consuelo”.
Nos gustan las bienaventuranzas,
pero no tanto los ayes;
nos gusta que Jesús nos bendiga,
no que maldiga nuestro acaparamiento
de la riqueza y los recursos.

“Bienaventurados ustedes los que ahora tienen hambre,
porque serán saciados.
¡Ay de ustedes, los que ahora están satisfechos!,
porque habrán de pasar hambre”.
Nos gustan las bienaventuranzas,
pero no tanto los ayes;
nos gusta que Jesús nos alimente,
no que refrene nuestro apetito
por el poder y el control.

“Bienaventurados ustedes los que ahora lloran,
porque reirán.
¡Ay de ustedes, los que ahora ríen!,
habrán de llorar y de lamentarse”.
Nos gustan las bienaventuranzas,
pero no tanto los ayes;
nos gusta que Jesús nos conforte,
no que agite nuestra conciencia
en torno al sufrimiento y el abuso.

“Bienaventurados serán ustedes cuando, por causa del Hijo del Hombre,
la gente los odie, los segregue, los vitupere,
y menosprecie su nombre como algo malo.
¡Ay de ustedes, cuando todos los alaben!,
porque lo mismo hacían con los falsos profetas los antepasados de esta “
Nos gustan las bienaventuranzas,
pero no tanto los ayes;
nos gusta que Jesús nos alabe,
no que reproche nuestra retórica
llena de engaño y vanidad.

JESÚS EN EL LLANO
tú que estuviste al lado de la gente,
tú que le diste la bienvenida al extranjero y al amigo,
recuérdanos que la salvación que tú proclamaste
implica un revés del orden social,

una verdadera liberación, una era de jubileo,
hasta que nuestras vidas y el mundo entero
reflejen tu santo propósito
y todas tus criaturas vivan en armonía.
