“Everyone counts” / “Todes cuentan”[i]

A reflection based on  Luke 15 / Una reflexión basada en Lucas 15

The powerful count.
They often use their authority
to control and intimidate
in order to retain
their vast privileges.

The wealthy count.
They often use their resources
to buy votes and candidates
in order to protect
their own interests.

We live in a world
where the people who count
are those with power and money,
while the masses are manipulated
and the poor are forgotten.

But we are followers of Jesus,
a wise teacher and servant leader
whose life and ministry showed us
that everyone counts
simply because they bear
the image and likeness of God.

And Jesus taught us
that when any of our siblings
are abandoned or left out,
persecuted or kicked out,
our flock, our treasure and our family
are impoverished and diminished.

It is up to us,
those who believe that everyone counts,
to defend human rights
and to seek creation’s well-being.
And then, only then,
we will be able to experience
a true and lasting joy.

Los poderosos cuentan.
A menudo usan su autoridad
para controlar e intimidar
y de ese modo retener
sus vastos privilegios.

Los ricos cuentan.
A menudo usan sus recursos
para comprar votos y candidatos
y de ese modo proteger
sus propios intereses.

Vivimos en un mundo
donde la gente que cuenta
es aquella que tiene poder y dinero,
mientras que las masas son manipuladas
y los pobres quedan olvidados.

Pero somos seguidores de Jesús,
un maestro sabio y líder sirviente
cuya vida y ministerio nos mostró
que todes cuentan
simplemente porque portan
la imagen y semejanza de Dios.

Y Jesús nos enseñó
que cuando cualquiera de nuestros semejantes
están abandonados o excluidos,
perseguidos o expulsados,
el rebaño, el tesoro y la familia
resultan empobrecidos y mermados.

Nos toca a nosotres,
quienes creemos que todes cuentan,
defender los derechos humanos
y procurar el bienestar de toda la creación.
Y entonces, solo entonces,
podremos experimentar
un gozo verdadero y duradero.
