“God’s armor” / “La armadura de Dios”

Some believers claim
that to fulfill the Great Commission
it suffices to obey God’s word,
by proclaiming salvation to the world
and making disciples in Jesus’ name.

Other faithful argue
that to bear faithful witness to the gospel
it is imperative to expose falsehoods,
to dismantle systems of oppression
and to advocate for equitable policies.

And in every Christian family
we find this stark division
between ardent evangelizers
and passionate activists,
as if we could run around
half naked or half dressed,
a dichotomy that often results in
fierce disagreements and painful schisms.

But Ephesians reminds us
that “we are not fighting
against flesh-and-blood enemies,
but against evil rulers and authorities
of the unseen world,
against mighty powers
in this dark world,
and against evil spirits
in the heavenly places.”

Therefore, in order to withstand
evil’s relentless assault
we must put on God’s armor,
relying for defense and empowerment
on truth, righteousness, peace and faith;
resisting the temptation
to label or to attack
those with whom we disagree;
and remembering that our only weapon
is “the sword of the Spirit,
which is the word of God.”

Forgive us, Loving God,
for causing divisions in your body,
with arrogance and rivalry.
Teach us, Inclusive Jesus,
to work for the unity of your body,
with determination and humility.
Enable us, Reconciling Spirit,
to strengthen the witness of your body,
with integrity and kindness.

Hay creyentes que alegan
que para cumplir con la Gran Comisión
basta con obedecer la palabra de Dios,
al proclamar al mundo la salvación
y hacer discípulos en el nombre de Jesús.

Otros fieles argumentan
que para dar un testimonio fiel del evangelio
es imperativo exponer las falsedades,
desmantelar los sistemas de opresión
y abogar por políticas equitativas.

Y en toda familia cristiana
hallamos esta marcada división
entre fervientes evangelizadores
y apasionados activistas,
como si pudiésemos andar
medio desnudos o medio vestidos,
una dicotomía de la cual a menudo resultan
encarnizados desacuerdos y dolorosos cismas.

Pero Efesios nos recuerda
que “no luchamos contra enemigos
de carne y hueso,
sino contra gobernadores malignos
y autoridades del mundo invisible,
contra fuerzas poderosas
de este mundo tenebroso
y contra espíritus malignos
de los lugares celestiales”.

Por lo tanto, para resistir
el ataque implacable del diablo
debemos ponernos la armadura de Dios,
basando nuestra defensa y empoderamiento
en la verdad, la justicia, la paz y la fe;
resistiendo la tentación
de etiquetar o atacar a las personas
con quienes tenemos desacuerdos;
y recordando que nuestra única arma
es “la espada del Espíritu,
la cual es la palabra de Dios”.

Perdónanos, Dios Amoroso,
por causar la división de tu cuerpo
con arrogancia y rivalidad.
Enséñanos, Jesús Incluyente,
a trabajar por la unidad de tu cuerpo
con determinación y humildad.
Permítenos, Espíritu Reconciliador,
fortalecer el testimonio de tu cuerpo,
con integridad y amabilidad.
