“Whose picture?” / “¿De quién es la imagen?”

A reflection based on Matthew 22:15-22 / Una reflexión basada en Mateo 22:15-22[i]

“Whose picture appears
stamped on the coin?,”
asked Jesus of the religious leaders
who attempted to frame him.

It was an easy question,
and they quickly answered: Caesar.
But then Jesus replied,
“Return to Caesar
what belongs to Caesar,
and return to God
what belongs to God.”

And just like the believers
of Jesus’ day
we must return to Caesar
that which belongs to Caesar:
the coin that bears his image,
along with the misplaced loyalties
that lead us to surrender
our voice and our vote
at the feet of empires and dictators
that trample on human rights
and strip all God’s children
of their dignity and their dreams,
their freedom and their future.

And just like the believers
of Jesus’ day
we must return to God
that which belongs to God:
the being that bears the Divinity’s image,
along with a renewed commitment
that leads us to surrender
our breath and our energy
at the feet of the commandments
that promote justice, mercy and peace
and that guarantee for all God’s children
their dignity and their dreams,
their freedom and their future.

“¿De quién es la imagen
grabada en la moneda?”,
preguntó Jesús a los líderes religiosos
que pretendían tenderle una trampa.

Era una pregunta fácil,
y contestaron rápidamente: César.
Pero entonces Jesús respondió:
“Devuelvan a César
lo que pertenece a César,
y devuelvan a Dios
lo que pertenece a Dios”.

Y al igual que los creyentes
de la época de Jesús
tenemos que devolverle al César
lo que pertenece al César:
la moneda que porta su imagen,
junto con las lealtades equivocadas
que nos conducen a rendir
nuestra voz y nuestro voto
a los pies de imperios y dictadores
que pisotean los derechos humanos
y le arrebatan a todas las criaturas de Dios
su dignidad y sus sueños,
su libertad y su futuro.

Y al igual que los creyentes
de la época de Jesús
tenemos que devolverle a Dios
lo que pertenece a Dios:
el ser que porta la imagen de la Divinidad,
junto con un renovado compromiso
que nos conduzca a rendir
nuestro aliento y nuestra energía
a los pies de los mandamientos
que promueven la justicia, la misericordia y la paz
y que garantizan a todas las criaturas de Dios
su dignidad y sus sueños,
su libertad y su futuro.
