“A neighborly God” / “Un Dios vecinal”

It’s the largest committee in any organization

and it meets often without previous notification;

it attracts people with a tendency to mumble

and invites them to join in a collective grumble;

the proposed agenda is always the same:

to talk about others and engage in defame;

they especially focus on those who don’t fit the mold

and devise ingenious ways to criticize and scold.

But as we read the Gospels we notice right away

that Jesus teaches us to behave in a different way;

he befriended tax collectors, forgave the sinners,

and with unwanted folks he sat down to dinner;

he could care less what others would say

and did what was right despite all the hearsay;

and he still calls us to act as his ambassadors

by embracing the unwelcomed outside our doors.

Outgoing God,

help us to resist the urge to moan and groan,

and the tendency to build barriers

against people who are different from our own.

Neighborly God,

teach us instead to step outside our comfort zone

and to be eager to build bridges

to befriend the stranger who lives next to our home.

“Un Dios vecinal”

Un recurso para la liturgia dominical basado en Lucas 15:1-2

Es el comité más numeroso de cualquier organización

y sesiona a menudo sin previa invitación;

atrae a la gente que le gusta murmurar

y la invita a unirse en un colectivo refunfuñar;

la agenda propuesta no suele variar:

hablar de los demás y dedicarse a difamar;

se enfocan especialmente en quienes no logran encajar

y hallan maneras ingeniosas de criticar y regañar.

Pero al leer los evangelios notamos enseguida

que Jesús nos enseña a seguir otro estilo de vida;

se acercó a los explotadores, a pecadoras perdonó

y con la muchedumbre marginada a la mesa se sentó;

no le importó para nada lo que la gente dijese

e hizo lo correcto aunque algunos lo maldijesen;

y él todavía nos llama a servir como embajadores

abrazando a los indeseables de todos los alrededores.

Dios Sociable,

ayúdanos a resistir el impulso quejumbroso

y la tendencia a construir barreras

contra la gente que es diferente a nosotros.

Dios Vecinal,

enséñanos por el contrario a salir de nuestro cascarón

y a mostrarnos ávidos de construir puentes

para acercarnos al desconocido que vive junto a nosotros.
