From the Pastor: “On Leadership”
Today is our annual service of installation of church officers. When men and women assume leadership as officers, it’s an important day in the life of an organization. It marks a new beginning, one full of possibilities and opportunities. But unlike any other institution, in the church we remember that we are servant leaders. That is to say, that we follow in the footsteps of “the one who came not to be served, but to serve.” Therefore, those called into leadership assume their office humbly. May God sustain all our leaders, and help them to be faithful servants!

De la Pastora: “Sobre el Liderazgo”
Hoy es el servicio anual de instalación de nuevos oficiales. Cuando hombres y mujeres asumen el liderazgo como oficiales, es un día importante en la vida de una organización. Marca un nuevo comienzo lleno de posibilidades y oportunidades. Pero a diferencia de las demás instituciones, en la iglesia recordamos que somos líderes sirvientes. Es decir, que seguimos los pasos de “aquel que vino no para ser servido, sino para servir”. Por lo tanto, quienes son llamados/as al liderazgo lo asumen con humildad. ¡Qué Dios sostenga a nuestros/as líderes y les ayuda a ser siervos/as fieles! ~ Rev. Magdalena I. García

From the Pastor: “On Leaving”
Today’s Gospel reading from Mark 1 marks the beginning of Jesus’ ministry, which involves calling the first disciples: two sets of brothers named Simon and Andrew, and James and John. These were not idle men, but busy workers; fishermen, to be more precise. Yet the story says that when Jesus called, right away they left everything and followed him. I always find that shocking. Can you imagine re-arranging your whole life to follow Jesus? Setting new priorities? What nets and attachments do you need to leave behind to follow Jesus? What’s holding you back? ~ Rev. De la Pastora: “Sobre el Dejar”
La lectura del Evangelio de hoy, tomada de Marcos 1, marca el comienzo del ministerio de Jesús, que involucra el llamado a los primeros discípulos: dos pares de hermanos llamados Simón y Andrés, y Santiago y Juan. No eran desempleados, sino trabajadores ocupados; eran pescadores, para ser más exacta. Sin embargo, la historia dice que cuando Jesús los llama inmediatamente dejan todo y lo siguen. A mí esto siempre me sorprende. ¿Se imagina lo que significa reacomodar toda su vida para seguir a Jesús? ¿Qué redes y apegos necesita usted dejar atrás para seguir a Jesús? ¿Y qué le detiene a usted? ~ Rev. From the Pastor: “On Following”
Following takes trust, but when we follow a competent leader, great things happen. Jesus started his ministry by gathering disciples, and saying to them, “Follow me.” They did, and their lives were changed forever. And Jesus also calls us to follow him on a journey of faith. Today is the birthday of the late Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., a courageous follower of Jesus, who once said: “Faith is taking the first step even when you don’t see the whole staircase.” Are you ready to take the first (or the next) step in following Jesus? ~ Rev. De la Pastora: “Sobre el Seguir”
Seguir requiere confianza, pero cuando nos ponemos en manos de un líder capaz, suceden grandes cosas. Jesús comenzó su ministerio llamando discípulos/as y diciéndoles, “Síganme”. Ellos y ellas le siguieron y sus vidas cambiaron para siempre. Y Jesús también nos llama a nosotros/as a seguirlo en un peregrinaje de fe. Hoy se conmemora el natalicio del Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., un valiente seguidor de Jesús, que en una ocasión dijo: “Fe es dar el primer paso incluso cuando no puedes ver toda la escalera”. ¿Estás listo/a para dar el primer (o el próximo) paso con Jesús? ~ Rev. From the Pastor: “On Epiphany”
The Christmas season ends with Epiphany (on January 6), a feast day in which the early church celebrated Jesus’ brilliant manifestation (epiphaneia in Greek, also translated as “appearing”) not only to the Magi, but also to the world through his birth, baptism, and first recorded miracle at the wedding at Cana. It’s a day that, for many of us, can often be just another occasion to indulge in gift giving. But I wonder what would happen if, today and every day, we focused instead on the brilliant manifestation of our witness for Christ in the world. ~ Rev. Magdalena I. García

De la Pastora: “Sobre la Epifanía”
La estación de Navidad termina con Epifanía (el 6 de enero), una festividad con la cual la iglesia primitiva celebraba la brillante manifestación de Jesús (epiphaneia en griego se traduce también como “aparición”) no sólo a los Magos, sino también al mundo por medio de su nacimiento, su bautismo y su primer milagro documentado en las bodas de Caná. Es un día que, para muchos de nosotros, a menudo puede ser sólo otra ocasión para hacer regalos. Pero yo me pregunto que pasaría si, por el contrario, hoy y todos los días nos enfocamos en la brillante manifestación de nuestro testimonio a favor de Cristo en el mundo. ~ Rev. Magdalena I. García

From the Pastor: “On Time”
On New Year’s Day we are all very aware of time: time passed and time ahead. One of the lectionary readings for this day is Ecclesiastes 3, which opens by saying, “There’s a season for everything and a time for every matter under the heavens,” and then goes on to enumerate a variety of contrasting human activities. In the church, we think of Advent as the beginning of a new year. But no matter how you count your days, we hope that every now and then you will pause and consider the best way to invest the wonderful gift of time that God has given you. Happy New Year!

De la Pastora: “Sobre el Tiempo”
El Día de Año Nuevo estamos muy conscientes del tiempo: tiempo pasado y tiempo por venir. Una de las lecturas del leccionario para este día es Ecleciastés 3, que comienza diciendo, “En este mundo todo tiene su hora; hay un momento para todo cuanto ocurre” y continúa enumerando una variedad de actividades humanas que contrastan. En la iglesia, consideramos que Adviento es el principio del año. Pero no importa como usted cuente sus días, esperamos que de vez en cuando haga un alto y considere cuál es la mejor forma de invertir el maravilloso don del tiempo que Dios le ha dado. ¡Feliz Año Nuevo! ~ Rev.
