From the Pastor: “On Gifts”
Contrary to popular belief, Christmas is not about buying; it’s about giving! We celebrate the gift of God’s great love in Jesus Christ by giving to others. And just in case you are still wondering what to give, here is a little help. “Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect.” These are words taken from a poem by American novelist Oren Arnold. May they help us honor the spirit of Christmas today and every day of the year. ~ Rev. Magdalena I. García
De la Pastora: “Sobre los Regalos”
Contrario a la opinión popular, la Navidad no es para comprar, ¡sino para regalar! Celebramos el don del gran amor de Dios en Jesucristo haciendo regalos a los demás. Y en caso de que usted aún no sepa qué regalar, he aquí una pequeña ayuda. “Sugerencias para regalos de Navidad: A su enemigo, dele perdón. A su oponente, tolerancia. A un amigo, su corazón. Al cliente, servicio. A toda persona, caridad. A cada niño, un buen ejemplo. A sí mismo, respeto”. Son palabras tomadas de un poema del novelista estadounidense Oren Arnold. From the Pastor: “On Angels”
The Christmas story includes the appearance of angels. We think this is awesome, because we’ve only seen angels on Christmas cards and pageants. But the biblical characters were frightened. Thus, the first word out of the angels’ mouths is always the same: “Fear not!,” although what usually follows is an incredible message that leaves the receivers baffled. How does this help us discern the voice of God in our lives? Perhaps the next time we are disturbed by a message we should pay closer attention. It might be that we have been visited by an angel! ~ Rev. Magdalena I. García
De la Pastora: “Sobre los Ángeles”
La historia de la Navidad incluye la aparición de ángeles. A nosotros esto nos parece maravilloso porque sólo hemos visto ángeles en las tarjetas y los dramas de Navidad. Pero los personajes bíblicos se espantaron. Por tanto, la primera palabra que sale de la boca de los ángeles siempre es la misma: “¡No teman!”, aunque lo que sigue usualmente es un increíble mensaje que deja a los receptores perplejos. ¿Cómo nos ayuda esto a discernir la voz de Dios en nuestras vidas? Quizás la próxima vez que un mensaje nos moleste debamos prestar atención. ¡Podría ser que nos ha visitado un ángel! ~ Rev. Magdalena I. García

From the Pastor: “On Rejoicing”
The third week of Advent traditionally emphasizes joy, and the lectionary readings describe three joyful witnesses: the prophet Isaiah (chapter 61), Mary the mother of Jesus (Luke 1:39-56), and John the Baptist (John 1:6-28). All three witnesses faced tremendous challenges in their lifetime, but instead of offering us a lament, they give us a song. How did they do it? By focusing on what the Lord had done for God’s people, and what the Lord had promised to do! That was the reason for their witness and their joy! And this can also be our reason to witness—and to rejoice! ~ Rev. Magdalena I. García
De la Pastora: “Sobre el Regocijo”
La tercera semana de Adviento tradicionalmente enfatiza el gozo y las lecturas del leccionario describen a tres testigos gozosos: el profeta Isaías (capítulo 61), María la madre de Jesús (Lucas 1:39-56) y Juan el Bautista (Juan 1:6-28). Los tres testigos encararon tremendos retos en sus vidas, pero en vez de ofrecernos un lamento nos dan un cántico. ¿Cómo lo lograron? ¡Al enfocarse en lo que Dios había hecho por su pueblo y lo que Dios había prometido hacer! ¡Ésa fue la razón de su testimonio y su gozo! Y ése puede ser también el motivo de nuestro testimonio—¡y de nuestro gozo! ~ Rev. Magdalena I. García

From the Pastor: “On Expecting”
Advent is a season of waiting, and all the narratives are full of expectation. We marvel at the story of Mary expecting the Christ child. We journey with Joseph and Mary expecting to find shelter. We wander with shepherds expecting to find a babe in a manger. And we follow a star with the magi expecting to find a new king. But beyond that, what are you expecting? What are you hoping for? Advent invites us to ponder this question, and the answer is not in the tree lights or the crowded malls. Sit quietly by candlelight, and the answer will emerge from your heart. ~ Rev. Magdalena I. García
De la Pastora: “Sobre las Expectativas”
Adviento es una época de espera y todas las narrativas están llenas de expectativa. Nos maravillamos con la historia de María que espera al niño Dios. Viajamos con José y María que esperan encontrar mesón. Vagamos con los pastores esperando encontrar al niño acostado en un pesebre. Y seguimos la estrella con los magos esperando encontrar un nuevo rey. Pero más allá de eso, ¿qué esperamos encontrar esta Navidad? ¿Qué anhelamos? Adviento nos invita a considerar esta pregunta y la respuesta no se halla en las luces del árbol ni en las tiendas abarrotadas. Siéntese calladamente junto a una vela y la respuesta surgirá de su corazón. ~ Rev. Magdalena I. García
