From the Pastor: “On the Paraclete"
As I write these words, thunderstorms are raging from Louisiana to Ohio, and some of my friends in Kentucky can’t go to sleep because of tornado warnings. Where do you take refuge in the face of fear? In today’s Gospel reading (John 14:15-21), Jesus reminds his fearful disciples that he will not leave them alone; he will send them the Paraclete (a word which in Greek means “advocate, helper, and comforter”). May we experience the presence of the Paraclete as we go through the challenges of our daily life, and may we be advocates, helpers, and comforters for one another.

De la Pastora: “Sobre el Paracleto"
Al escribir estas palabras, las tormentas rugen desde Louisiana hasta Ohio, y algunas de mis amistades en Kentucky no pueden dormir por causa de los avisos de tornado. ¿Dónde se refugia usted cuando tiene miedo? En la lectura del Evangelio para hoy (Juan 14:15-21), Jesús le recuerda a sus atemorizados discípulos que no los dejará solos; les mandará el Paracleto (una palabra que en griego significa “abogado, ayudante y consolador”). Ojalá que experimentemos la presencia del Paracleto al enfrentar los retos del diario vivir, y que seamos defensa, ayuda y consuelo para nuestros semejantes.

From the Pastor: “On Making Room"
In today’s Gospel reading from John 14, we hear Jesus saying: “There is plenty of room for you in my Father’s home” (The Message). What do you picture when you hear these words? For generations Christians have used these words at funerals, implying that there is a place for everyone in heaven (regardless of what heaven means for you). But given Jesus’ teaching and life, I’m convinced that Jesus also meant something else: that there is room for everyone at God’s house here and now. What about your table? Can you make room for all?

De la Pastora: “Sobre Hacer Lugar"
En el Evangelio para hoy en Juan 14 oímos a Jesús decir: “En el hogar de mi Padre, hay lugar más que suficiente” (Nueva Traducción viviente). ¿Qué imaginamos al oír estas palabras? Por generaciones los cristianos hemos usado estas palabras en funerales, con la implicación de que hay lugar para tod@s en el cielo (no importa lo que usted crea sobre el cielo). Pero a la luz de la vida y enseñanzas de Jesús, estoy convencida de que Jesús también quiso decir algo más: que hay lugar para tod@s en la casa de Dios aquí y ahora. ¿Qué tal su mesa? ¿Tiene lugar para tod@s?

From the Pastor: “On Fidelity"
Last Tuesday our presbyteries ratified an amendment to the constitution that will open the possibility of ordination for gay and lesbian deacons, elders, and ministers. The vote has renewed interest in the theme of fidelity as a standard for ordination. Measuring a person’s or a community of faith’s fidelity to the Word of God is not easy; it requires that we engage taboo subjects, like stewardship, economic disparities, sexual exploitation, and racial discrimination. Maybe that’s why we’ve been discussing sexuality for 33 years!

El martes pasado nuestros presbiterios ratificaron una enmienda a la Constitución que abrirá la posibilidad de que diáconos/diaconisas, ancian@s y ministr@s homosexuales sean ordenados/as. El voto ha renovado el interés en el tema de la fidelidad como estándar para la ordenación. Medir la fidelidad de una persona o una comunidad de fe a la Palabra de Dios no es fácil; requiere que abordemos temas tabú, como la mayordomía, las disparidades económicas, la explotación sexual y la discriminación racial. ¡Quizás por eso hemos estado hablando sobre sexualidad humana por 33 años!

From the Pastor: “On Mothers”
I recently visited Newark to serve as speaker for a women’s conference. My host was a woman pastor who welcomed me into the home she shares with her husband, daughter, and mother (a sweet woman whose name is Candy!). I noticed a lot of angels on display, and a small banner that said: “If you don’t believe in angels, you haven’t met my mother.” What a beautiful tribute to a mom! On this Mother’s Day, let us praise God for all the wonderful women who—like angels—have protected us and nurtured us, and who have shown us God’s constant love. ~ Pastor Magdalena
De la Pastora: “Sobre las Madres”
Recientemente visité Newark para servir como oradora en una conferencia de mujeres. Mi anfitriona fue una pastora que me recibió en el hogar que comparte con su esposo, su hija y su madre (una dulce mujer que se llama Candy). Me fijé que había muchos ángeles en exhibición y un pequeño estandarte que decía: “Si no crees en los ángeles es porque no has conocido a mi mamá”. ¡Qué bello tributo a una mujer! Este Día de las Madres, alabemos a Dios por todas esas maravillosas mujeres que—cual ángeles—nos han protegido y nutrido, y nos han mostrado el amor constante de Dios.

From the Pastor: “On Doubting"
In the Gospel of John the resurrection story includes the incident about Thomas, the disciple who asks for proof that he can see and touch. Thomas gets a lot of bad press, but he is no different from all of us who long to experience the presence of the living God. And he is no different from the world around us. So the question is, can the world see God in our lives beyond all doubt? Can the world feel God in our embrace beyond all doubt? Come Holy Spirit, and empower us to live in such a way that the world might see and feel God’s presence!

De la Pastora: “Sobre las Dudas”
En el Evangelio de Juan la narrativa de la resurrección incluye el incidente sobre Tomás, el discípulo que pide una prueba que pueda ver y tocar. Tomás recibe mucha mala prensa, pero no es diferente de todos nosotros que anhelamos experimentar la presencia del Dios viviente. Y no es diferente al resto del mundo a nuestro alrededor. De modo que la pregunta es: ¿puede el mundo ver a Dios en nuestras vidas más allá de toda duda? ¿Puede el mundo sentir a Dios en nuestro abrazo más allá de toda duda? ¡Ven, Espíritu Santo, y danos poder para vivir de forma tal que el mundo pueda ver y sentir la presencia de Dios!
