THE REAL TRAGEDY
Unrestricted gobbling and holiday
shopping guides take over the media, as coverage of the ongoing questions
surrounding the Ferguson verdict, and dialogue on dismantling racism and
reducing the economic divide, get relegated to sidebars. The media is certainly
addicted to the sensational (and the profitable), and rarely interested in
daily life (and righteousness). What about us? Will Thanksgiving be an excuse
to stuff ourselves with half-truths, and numb our senses with new myths? Or
will we feast on the possibility of inviting everyone to the table, including
new immigrants and social outcasts, thus affirming our common humanity? And
what about people of faith? Will Advent be an excuse to get wrapped up in
otherworldly visions of angels? Or will we heed the message of the celestial
messengers and their mundane call for “peace on Earth”? The real tragedy is not
the sporadic outbreak of violence, but the ongoing eruption of
shalom-salaam-namaste-pax by our apathy.

La
engullidera ilimitada y las guías de compras festivas se apoderan de los
medios, mientras que la cobertura de las preguntas pendientes en torno al
veredicto de Ferguson y el diálogo sobre el desmantelamiento del racismo y la
reducción de las divisiones económicas quedan relegados a las barras laterales.
Los medios ciertamente están adictos a lo sensacional (y lo rentable), y rara
vez se interesan por lo cotidiano (y la rectitud). ¿Y qué de nosotros? ¿Será el
Día de Acción de Gracias una excusa para rellenarnos de medias verdades y
adormecernos con nuevos mitos? ¿O festejaremos por la posibilidad de invitar a
todos y todas a la mesa, incluyendo los nuevos inmigrantes y los marginados
sociales? ¿Y qué del pueblo de fe? ¿Será Adviento una excusa para dejarnos
envolver por visiones sobrenaturales de ángeles? ¿O haremos caso al anuncio de
los mensajeros celestiales y su mundanal llamado de “paz en la tierra”? La
verdadera tragedia no es el estallido esporádico de la violencia, sino la
erupción continua del shalom-salaam-namaste-pax producto de nuestra apatía.

ON PRIVILEGE
Perhaps the ultimate sign of privilege (and cowardice) is having—and exercising—the option to remain silent and passive in the face of injustices. This takes many shapes, from distancing ourselves from the root of the problem and the enraged people, to blaming the victims and justifying unfair systems and processes, and even putting the burden on God to act by turning to prayer alone. But the end result is always the same: the wall of human separation and degradation continues to grow and, inevitably, every now and then a few bricks fall on all of us. And unless we work together and consistently on eliminating the divides, none of us will be able to live securely and with integrity on either side of that wall.

Esto toma muchas formas, desde distanciarnos del meollo del asunto y la gente encolerizada, hasta culpar a las víctimas y justificar los sistemas y procesos injustos, e incluso echarle la carga a Dios para que actúe al recurrir únicamente a la oración. Pero el resultado final es siempre el mismo: la pared de separación y degradación humana continúa creciendo e, inevitablemente, de vez en cuando nos caen unos ladrillos a todos y todas. Y a menos que trabajemos juntos y consistentemente para eliminar las divisiones, nadie podrá vivir con seguridad e integridad en ninguno de los dos lados de la muralla.

PONDERING
Which is the worst harm inflicted by
the racial divide in this country? The rage that burns down buildings or the
indifference that scorches dreams? I suspect they are equally destructive,
although the former is sporadic and more easily contained, while the latter is
ongoing and more readily disguised.

ON THE REACTION TO THE MICHAEL BROWN
CASE
Responding to violence with violence is clearly not the answer. We need systemic and cultural changes to dismantle racism in all spheres of society (including the church). Still, when the establishment daily inflicts violence on minorities and on the poor by denying them voice, respect, access to resources, and justice, calling on marginalized masses to respond constructively in the face of ongoing injuries is the ultimate act of hypocrisy and provocation. We need a campaign that indicts the system for inflicting violence, and holds it accountable for engaging all peoples and communities constructively.
