From the Pastor: “On Water”
Jesus’ encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well invites us to consider our water consumption habits. Did you know that bottled water is more expensive than gasoline, is not necessarily safer than tap water, and creates much waste? And did you know that multinational bottled-water companies privatize local water sources while denying access to poor communities? You and I can share Jesus’ living water by choosing to “say no to bottled water.” Come Holy Spirit, and free us from the addiction to bottled water so that others may drink and live!

El encuentro de Jesús con la mujer samaritana en el pozo nos invita a considerar nuestros hábitos de consumo de agua. ¿Sabía usted que el agua embotellada es más cara que la gasolina, no es necesariamente más segura que la del grifo, y genera mucha basura? ¿Y sabía usted que las multinacionales embotelladoras de agua privatizan este recurso en localidades en las que a la vez se les niega acceso al líquido vital a las comunidades pobres? Usted y yo podemos compartir el agua viva de Jesús si decimos “no al agua embotellada”. ¡Ven, Espíritu Santo, y libéranos de la adicción al agua embotellada para que otros puedan beber y vivir!

“On Birthing Pains”
Nicodemus was a Pharisee, a leader of the Jews, a devout man who goes to see Jesus late at night, because he is captivated by the Master’s teachings and works. But he is baffled by Jesus’ demand that he must be born again of water and Spirit. The story leaves us wondering about his lack of response. Did he really not get it? I don’t think so. But he apparently lacked the courage to go through the birthing pains! What about us? Are we also afraid of change? Of losing control? Of what we might become? Come Holy Spirit, and release us from the womb of the past!

Nicodemo era un fariseo. un líder de los judíos, un hombre devoto que fue a ver a Jesús tarde en la noche, porque estaba admirado por las enseñanzas y las obras del Maestro. Pero se quedó perplejo cuando Jesús le exigió que tenía que nacer de nuevo del agua y el Espíritu. La historia nos deja pensando en su falta de respuesta. ¿En verdad no entendió? No lo creo. Pero aparentemente no tuvo valor para enfrentarse a los dolores de parto. ¿Y nosotr@s? ¿También le tenemos miedo al cambio? ¿A perder el control? ¿A lo que podemos llegar a ser? Ven, Espíritu Santo, y libéranos del vientre del pasado!

From the Pastor: “On Lent”
Today is the first Sunday in Lent, the countdown to Easter. It is made up of 40 days (minus Sundays, which are considered mini-Easters). The number 40 reminds us of the people of Israel wandering in the desert, and Jesus praying and fasting, also in the desert. In the Early Church, Lent was a time of repentance for sinners, and of preparation for converts to be baptized. And Lent can be both things for us: a time to seek forgiveness and healing, and a season to open ourselves to God’s transformation. Come Holy Spirit, and renew us during Lent!

De la Pastora: “Sobre Cuaresma”
Hoy es el primer domingo de Cuaresma, que es la cuenta regresiva hasta Resurrección. Consiste de 40 días (menos los domingos, que son pequeñas Pascuas). El número 40 nos recuerda al pueblo de Israel vagando por el desierto, y a Jesús orando y ayunando también en el desierto. En la Iglesia Primitiva, la Cuaresma era una época de arrepentimiento para los pecadores, y de preparación para el bautismo de los nuevos conversos. Y la Cuaresma puede ser ambas cosas para nosotros: una época de buscar perdón y sanidad, y una estación para abrirnos a la transformación de Dios. ¡Ven, Espíritu Santo, y renuévanos durante Cuaresma!

God of the quake,
may your peace still the hearts
of those who tremble in fear;
and may the earth’s roar
shake us up from apathy
and move us to give ear
to the cry of people who suffer
both far and near.

God of the wave,
may your comfort wash over the lives
of those who shudder in distress;
and may the churning waters
sweep away our indifference
and propel our willingness to bless
your suffering children
who are adrift and dispossessed.

One hundred years have passed since International Women’s Day was instituted, an occasion to support women in their struggle for equal rights, equal opportunity, and equal pay. For Christians this is not new. More than two thousand years ago Jesus launched a gender revolution by accepting women as disciples, and demanding that others treat them as persons of equal value—including the sick, widows, the foreigners, the prostitutes. Come Holy Spirit, and free us from cultural captivity so we can build God’s Kingdom!

Han pasado cien años desde que se instituyó el Día Internacional de la Mujer, una ocasión para apoyar a las mujeres en su lucha por la igualdad de derechos, igualdad de oportunidades e igualdad de pago. Para los cristianos esto no es nada nuevo. Hace más de dos mil años Jesús lanzó la revolución de género al aceptar a las mujeres como discípulas, y al exigir que fuesen tratadas como seres humanos de igual valor—incluyendo las enfermas, las viudas, las extranjeras y las prostitutas. ¡Ven, Espíritu Santo, y líbranos del cautiverio cultural para que podamos consrtuir el Reino de Dios!
