“A tall order” / “Una tarea difícil”

A reflection based on Luke 6:27-38 / Una reflexión basada en Lucas 6:27-38

To love our enemies,
to do good to those who hate us,
to bless those who curse us,
to pray for those who hurt us,
to offer the other cheek to those who attack us,
to show generosity to those who cheat us...
it’s a tall order.

It’s like being asked to get close
to a bee keeping box
or a beehive
knowing that stings hurt,
that they cause burning,
redness and swelling
for hours and even days.

But refusing to do it
is forgetting that we too
are daily in need of divine grace
for failing to love in the agape way,
which does not involve fleeting emotions
and never pursues its own benefits,
but rather seeks to create
justice and mercy,
kindness and harmony,
prosperity and well-being
for creation and humankind.

And refusing to try it
is failing to trust
the power of love
to disarm old enemies,
to heal open wounds
and to transform society
into God’s reign on earth.

Amar a nuestros enemigos,
hacer bien a quienes nos odian,
bendecir a quienes nos maldicen,
orar por quienes nos lastiman,
poner la otra mejilla a quienes nos agreden,
mostrar generosidad a quienes nos hacen trampas…
es una tarea difícil.

Es como que se nos pida acercarnos
a una caja de apicultura
o una colmena de abejas
sabiendo que las picadas duelen,
que causan escozor,
enrojecimiento e hinchazón
por horas e incluso días.

Pero rehusar hacerlo
es olvidar que nosotres también
a diario necesitamos la gracia divina
porque no sabemos amar al estilo agape,
que no consiste de emociones pasajeras
y nunca procura su propio beneficio,
sino que busca crear
justicia y misericordia,
bondad y armonía,
prosperidad y bienestar
para la creación y la humanidad.

Y rehusar intentarlo
equivale a no confiar
en el poder del amor
para desarmar antiguos enemigos,
sanar heridas abiertas
y transformar la sociedad
en el reinado de Dios en la tierra.

A prayer for Valentine’s Day based on 1 John 4:7-21 / Una reflexión para el Día de San Valentín basada en 1 Juan 4:7-21

Grant us, God of mercy,
big and generous hearts
that give witness to your love
in the sanctuary and in the streets,
by embracing all your children,
by being moved to compassion when they suffer,
and by seeking their well-being.

You created us in your image and likeness,
unique and inimitable,
and at the same time with incredible diversity.
You sent Jesus to embody
your passion for righteousness and justice
by establishing relationships with full equity.
And you call us to live in community,
opening the circle and expanding the table,
to show the world your radical inclusion.

Free us from believing the lie
that it is possible to love you,
the Divinity we cannot see,
while neglecting and exploiting
our siblings who are at our side,
the ones whose common humanity
we refuse to see.

And grant us, God of life,
courage to speak truth to power,
strength to resist malicious attacks,
and integrity to overcome evil with good.
Grant us, God of mercy,
big and generous hearts.

Concédenos, Dios de misericordia,
corazones grandes y generosos,
que den testimonio de tu amor
en el santuario y en las calles,
al abrazar a todes tus hijes,
al sentir compasión cuando sufren
y al comprometernos con sus luchas.

Tú nos creaste a tu imagen y semejanza,
únicos e inimitables,
pero a la vez con una increíble diversidad.
Tú enviaste a Jesús para encarnar
tu pasión por la rectitud y la justicia
estableciendo relaciones de plena equidad.
Y tú nos llamas a vivir en comunidad,
abriendo el círculo y expandiendo la mesa,
para mostrar al mundo tu radical inclusividad.

Libéranos de creer en la mentira
de que es posible amarte a ti,
la Divinidad que no podemos ver,
mientras descuidamos y explotamos
a nuestres hermanes que están a nuestro lado,
aquelles cuya humanidad en común
rehusamos ver.

Y danos, Dios de la vida,
valor para decir la verdad al poder,
fuerza para resistir los ataques maliciosos,
e integridad para vencer con el bien el mal.
Concédenos, Dios de misericordia,
corazones grandes y generosos.
